🌍 From Space to a Deeper Understanding of Our Planet🌏
The students of the Master’s Degree Programme in Planetary Sciences visited ESA ESRIN in Frascati, one of the European Space Agency’s key centres for Earth Observation, during a visit organised by Prof. Monica Pondrelli. The visit gave the students the opportunity to discover first-hand how satellites observe the Earth and how data acquired from space can be used to study natural and environmental processes of major scientific and societal relevance. At the φ-Experience, satellite images, mission models, immersive visualisations and interactive tools highlighted the potential of Earth Observation in describing and analysing our planet: not simply as “images” of the Earth, but as data, measurements and scientific information. Every pixel acquired by a satellite can contain valuable information on vegetation, soil, oceans, ice, the atmosphere, urban areas and environmental change. For geosciences, this means being able to observe and interpret complex processes such as landslides, subsidence, ground deformation, floods, the effects of seismic events and landscape transformations. A particularly interesting part of the visit was dedicated to the archives and to the Long Term Data Preservation programme, which ensures the long-term conservation and accessibility of satellite data. The availability of long, reliable and well-documented time series is essential for understanding the evolution of the Earth and for developing increasingly robust scientific models. This experience showed the students how space technologies are now central not only to exploration, but also to understanding our planet, monitoring the environment and supporting the management of natural hazards.

⚡️ Paper of the week by Dr. Arianna Casarin, Dr. Francesco Radica, Prof. Ilaria Capasso, Dr. Maria Giovanna Masciotta, Dr. Davide Potere, Dr. Davide Rapone, Prof. Giuseppe Brando and Prof. Gianluca Iezzi. The ornamental stones of the Roman thermal baths of Teate Marrucinorum (Chieti, Italy): autoptic, geochemical and minero-petrographic multi-analytical characterisations🏛️

This study, published in Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, investigates the decorative stones used in the Roman thermal baths of Teate Marrucinorum (Chieti, Italy) through an integrated analytical approach. Provenance studies on polychromatic varieties traditionally relied only on visual comparison and expert assessment. In this study, ornamental stones from the 2nd-century AD thermal complex were investigated through visual, petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical analyses. Those specimens have been classified into polychrome stones, grey-veined marbles, and white crystalline marbles based on macroscopic characteristics. Mineralogical, petrographic, geochemical, Raman, and isotopic analyses revealed that the grey-veined marble is Greco Scritto quarried near Ephesus (Turkey), and the provenances of white marbles are Carrara (Italy) and Marmara Island (Turkey). The coloured stones resulted Pavonazzetto from Afyon Region (Turkey), Cipollino Verde from Eubea (Greece), Portasanta (Chios Island), and Breccia di Settebasi (Skyros Island). Combining visual observations with quantitative analyses enabled a more reliable reconstruction of the provenance and properties of the stones used in the Roman baths. Additionally, the provenance and quality of the identified Roman stones highlight the significance of Teate Marrucinorum during the Imperial period.

🧱Field trip to a concrete mixing plant and aggregate certification laboratory⚒️
Concrete aggregates from extraction to certification, to mixing, and innovative strategies for recovering and processing seconary raw materials. On Monday, May 4th, students from the Bachelor's degree program in Geology and the Master's degree program in Construction Engineering visited the Inerti Valfino s.r.l. aggregate treatment and pre-mix concrete plant to survey the entire cycle of natural and recycled aggregates. They then visited the ELab laboratory to learn about the tests that lead to aggregate certification.

⛏️Reading global change in the rocks of Gubbio⛏️
As part of the Master’s Degree in Planetary Sciences, students took part in a field excursion to the Bottaccione Gorge, near Gubbio, one of the most iconic geological localities in the world for understanding Earth history and global change.
During the field activity, students observed key stratigraphic intervals preserved within the pelagic carbonate succession of the Umbria–Marche Apennines, including the Bonarelli Level, the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary, and the symbolic marker commonly associated with the so-called “Golden Spike” of this world-famous section.
The Bottaccione Gorge offers an extraordinary natural laboratory where field geology, stratigraphy, palaeontology, geochemistry and planetary science come together. Here, a very thin clay-rich layer records one of the most dramatic events in Earth history: the transition from the Cretaceous to the Paleogene, linked to the end-Cretaceous mass extinction and to the global environmental consequences of the Chicxulub impact.
For students in Planetary Sciences, this field trip represented a unique opportunity to connect terrestrial geological archives with planetary-scale processes: impact events, abrupt global change, mass extinctions, sedimentary records and the use of multiple independent proxies to reconstruct past environmental crises.
Fieldwork remains a fundamental part of scientific training. Observing rocks directly in the field allows students to move from theory to evidence, from global models to real stratigraphic sections, and from Earth history to broader planetary perspectives.
