Come and see us in Pisa at "GEOSCIENCES: A TOOL IN A CHANGING WORLD"

P4. An entire rock entrapped inside a mineral grain. What we can learn from it?
M. Alvaro (UNIPV), M. Scambelluri (UNIGE)

Solid and fluid inclusions in minerals carry a wealth of information on geological processes otherwise invisible at whole rock scale. Information on (i) residual stresses, mineral growth, pressure-temperature conditions of encapsulation, and on (ii) fluid composition, mineral solubility, redox conditions, metasomatic processes, magma genesis, mass and heat transfer are respectively recorded by solid and fluid inclusions and by their mineral hosts. The correct interpretation of these records requires careful analysis. Recent advances in methodological and technical approaches significantly improved our capability of extracting such information.

Geodynamicists, structural geologists, petrologists and mineralogists are driven by the same essential curiosity about processes affecting the Earth’s crust and lithosphere, and use different tools to understand these processes. If properly quantified and interpreted, fabrics and microstructures in…

EGU 2017 - Session GMPV3.2/TS3.6 "Inclusions in minerals as record of geological processes"

Dear Colleagues,

Inclusions in minerals yield a wealth of information on geological processes invisible at the whole rock scale, because they are protected by their host minerals that reduce or prevent post-formation alteration.

Unravel geological processes investigating inclusions entrapped in their hosts will be the focus of session (GMPV3.2/TS3.6) on "Inclusions in minerals as record of geological processes" at EGU2017 http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2017/session/24706 in Vienna, Austria, April 23-28, 2017.

Deadlines:
Abstract submission deadline: 11 Jan 2017
Student support application deadline: 01 Dec 2016

The aim of this session is to bring together a wide range of people working on fluid, solid and melt inclusions to illustrate new analytical methods and results, to define the analytical challenges that remain, and to encourage new collaborations in the analysis of inclusion systems by complimentary methods. Our two keynote talks will be given by Yuri Podladchikov (University of Lausanne, Switzerland) on problems related to the modelling of host-inclusion environment and Jörg Hermann (University of Bern) on UHP rocks from subducted continental crust. Please consider contributing to the session, yourself!

To mark the occasion of the second International Diamond School
(IDS) held in January 2015 at Bressanone (Italy), it is appropriate to publish a special issue of Lithos on diamond research entitled “The nature of diamonds and their use in Earth’s study”. The IDS, sponsored by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and by the Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO), was a special event that allowed undergraduate students, Ph.D. students and young scientists to meet, learn and discuss diamond research with some of the most eminent international scientists and leaders from industry, for an entire week. In alignment with the aim of the school, the goal of this issue is present a collection of research papers, from scientists from all over the world, providing an overview of the most advanced frontiers in diamond research, with the aim of demonstrating how diamonds can be used to provide a unique perspective on the deep Earth.
