Cyprus 🇨🇾 | Arodafnousa

Some heritage is preserved not in objects, but in voices.

Arodafnousa is one of Cyprus’s best-known traditional folk songs, passed down through oral tradition for generations. Its different versions carry language, memory and stories from Cyprus’s past into the present.

Through singing, remembering and sharing songs like Arodafnousa, women have helped keep oral traditions alive within families and communities, passing cultural knowledge from one generation to the next.

Through HERS, we celebrate women as active carriers of cultural heritage and the everyday ways in which heritage continues to live.

🎶 Rebetiko is more than a musical genre. It is a cultural expression shaped by the everyday experiences, emotions and stories of people living in Greece’s urban communities.

Emerging during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, its songs explored themes such as love, migration, hardship, work and hope. Through distinctive melodies, lyrics and instruments such as the bouzouki and baglamas, Rebetiko became an important form of collective expression.

Women performers also played a significant role in shaping its sound and preserving its legacy, bringing their own voices and experiences to a musical tradition often associated with social change and resilience.

Passed down through live performances, recordings and new generations of musicians, Rebetiko remains a living part of Greek cultural identity. In 2017, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Learn more from UNESCO.

🇬🇷 Through Rebetiko, the stories of the past continue to resonate in the present.

✨ Cultural heritage connects people to their history, identity, and shared sense of belonging.

After exploring the personal stories and everyday traditions carried by women across different communities, the HERS project now turns its attention to cultural heritage at a national level.

Through this final awareness campaign, we will highlight three distinctive cultural traditions from Greece, Italy, and Cyprus. Each reflects the knowledge, creativity, and collective memory passed down through generations, while continuing to shape cultural identity today.

🌍 Follow the HERS journey as we discover how national heritage connects the past with the present and brings communities together across Europe.

Lefkaritika lace is one of Cyprus’ most distinctive examples of intangible cultural heritage. More than a craft, it carries knowledge, patience, identity and memory, passed from one generation of women to the next and deeply rooted in the community of Lefkara.

Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Lefkaritika reminds us that heritage does not only live in monuments or museums. It lives in people, in skills, in stories, and in the hands that continue to keep traditions alive.

Through HERS, we have explored the power of women’s stories and cultural heritage. As the project reaches its final stage, we continue sharing these stories to help preserve them, celebrate them and bring them to wider audiences.

✨ They are finally here!

After months of mentoring sessions, artistic workshops, and creative exploration, we’re proud to share the 60 stories created by women with migration backgrounds who participated in the HERS project across Greece, Italy, and Cyprus.

Through paintings, crafts, and storytelling, these women share memories of home, traditions they carry with them, and the journeys that continue to shape their identities. Together, their stories celebrate the richness of intangible cultural heritage and the vital role women play in preserving and reimagining it.

đź’™ We invite you to explore the Stories section on the HERS website and discover the voices, artworks, and experiences behind this remarkable journey.

🍽️ Food has the power to bring people together, no matter where they come from.

At the HERS Storytelling Festival in Athens, we celebrated food as a living expression of intangible cultural heritage. Through personal stories, shared traditions, and a multicultural buffet prepared by Odyssea’s beneficiaries, participants reflected on how recipes connect them to their countries of origin while creating a sense of belonging in Greece. ❤️

❓What if cultural heritage is not only preserved in museums, archives, or history books?
❓What if it lives in family recipes, songs, traditions, memories, and stories shared around a table, during celebrations, or passed quietly from one generation to the next?

Across Europe, ♀️ women play a vital role in carrying and preserving cultural heritage every day. Through their experiences, knowledge, creativity, and traditions, they keep cultures alive while building bridges between communities and generations.

Through the HERS project, we are creating a space where these stories can be shared, celebrated, and preserved.

✨ Soon, the HERS platform will bring together personal stories, artworks, memories, and cultural heritage shared by women from diverse backgrounds across Europe. Because behind every tradition, there is a story. And behind every story, there is a voice worth hearing.
