🚽 "Miss, can I go to the bathroom?"

We've all heard it, sometimes multiple times in one lesson. And it always seems like it's the request of someone looking to escape from the classroom for a bit... "Maybe they're bored" you might think to yourself whilst weighing the request. But it's not always so simple.

Many neurodivergent people experience differences in interoception – the sense that helps us recognise hunger, thirst, tiredness, anxiety, and when they need the toilet. When those signals get mixed up, which happens frequently even in neurotypical brains, the result can be confusion, urgency, embarrassment, and a lot of misunderstandings.

In this week's blog post, I talk about confused interoceptive signals, a rather embarrassing childhood bathroom story, and why responding with curiosity rather than suspicion can make a huge difference.
