One week ago, the Amazon closed the circle. More than 2,500 people from 32 nations marched through the streets of Puyo - songs, dances, colors, banners - carrying the voice of the rainforest all the way to the Provincial Governor's Office of Pastaza. There, the seven Indigenous nationalities formally delivered the Declaración Política de Puyuk, declaring a state of emergency for the Amazon biome - and the governor signed it.

From the press conference at Parque de las Nacionalidades to the final steps at Co**ha Acústica, one message rang loud and clear: the Amazon is alive, it has rights, and it will not be silenced.

[𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐐𝐆𝐈𝐒: 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡]

Urban riparian ecosystems represent a fundamental strategy to mitigate climate change.
Through QGIS, it is possible to develop a multi-temporal analysis of ecosystems’ evolution by utilizing high-resolution aerial images from 1955, 1981, and 2018, with InVEST modeling to estimate carbon sequestration.

The results for the city of Padua (Italy) show a decrease in carbon sequestration from 1955 to 2018 due to the increase in impervious surfaces.
Finally, a simulation of a future afforestation scenario to 2050 is performed and it shows a possible urban strategy to enhance carbon stocks and to mitigate climate change in urban areas.

The study was conducted by the research group “Climate Change, Territories, Diversity”, Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering, University of Padua.

Collective Cartography is a practical tool that develops "in common" the understanding of a defined space, through an equal and non-hierarchical exchange of perspectives.

Inspired by the “mapeo coletivo” of the iconoclasistas from Buenos Aires, Kollektiv OrangoTango designed the manual ‘Collective Critical Mapping’. It offers suggestions to inspire political practice through mapping in order to change realities.

[Four Houses, One Voice: XII FOSPA Moves Toward Closure]

The second day of the XII FOSPA was intensive, with the thematic houses closing out their proposals and work amid some discontent and criticism over methodology and representation issues. The day was also marked by the rulings of the International Rights of Nature Tribunal, which, from morning to afternoon, heard six emblematic pan-amazonian territorial cases of social and environmental impacts caused by oil and gas companies, involving violations of collective, human, and nature’s rights.

Tomorrow begins early, with the Waorani march rising up to amplify Indigenous voices against the ongoing non-compliance with the historic popular mandate of the Yasuní referendum. Meanwhile, an assembly will present the proposals and work carried out by the houses, and in the afternoon, the closing plenary of FOSPA will take place.

[United for the Amazon: “Adoke Öme” Amazonia un solo territorio - DAY 2]
The XII FOSPA is underway, unfolding across four thematic houses built to defend the Amazon and its peoples.

Puyo is a living symbol of Indigenous resistance, home to the same seven nationalities who, in the early 1990s, marched all the way to Quito and won recognition of their territories and the creation of the first Amazonian Indigenous parliament.

Today, those same seven nationalities welcome over 2,000 participants and 100 Indigenous nationalities to weave together a social tissure of alliances to protect a free, autonomous Amazon (one that knows no borders).

The “Yasunì Biosphere Reserve” in Ecuador was established by UNESCO in 1989 to protect local biological and cultural diversity, but it is still home to oil extraction activities that cause socio-environmental conflicts and threats to the conservation of the area.

This research, using the involvement of local communities and cartographic elaborations through GIS, aims to provide useful tools for sustainable land use through tourism activities with low environmental impact, proposing the recovery, territorial valorization and overcoming the petroleumscape in favor of building alternative development processes.

[The “Cuenca Amazónica” converges in Puyo]

The XII Foro Social Panamazónico ( ) kicked off today in Puyo, bringing together Indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant and local communities, social movements, and academics from across the Amazon Basin. Our Centre of Excellence Jean Monnet on Just Fossil Fuel Transitions Dipartimento Icea Unipd is proud to be part of this collective momentum and to share the main aspects and outcomes of

Before the opening ceremony even began, we were already in the field. We joined the Waorani community of Bataboro, at the end of the Vía Auca, where an abandoned oil well still leaks into the rainforest. A stark, physical reminder of what extractivism leaves behind long after the companies are gone. From there, we joined the Toxic Tour de la Mano Negra de Chevron, organized by UDAPT (Unión de Afectados y Afectadas por las Operaciones Petroleras de Texaco). Across four stops through Sucumbíos, UDAPT walked us through the story of Chevron-Texaco’s contamination, a story that isn’t history, but a reality still being lived by these communities today.

By the time the opening ceremony arrived, the day’s weight was already clear. It was there that the Casa Autónoma was presented: a space born from Indigenous peoples’ demand for their own voice and decision-making power, uniting Indigenous organizations from all 9 countries of the Amazon Basin under one roof.

Now, four intensive working days begin, with one shared mission: to build a common action agenda that defends the Amazon, resists extractivism, and protects the rights and self-determination of its peoples.

[𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝, 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐩 𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞]

Cartography is not a neutral science: it often operates under a mask to legitimize political and social decisions.

This is why the counter-cartography movement is growing: a way to overturn the dominant narrative and give voice to those who have always remained invisible.

- Institutional maps may hide forced industrialization or the discomfort of those who live in the territory, preferring a sterile and functional vision.
- From environmental struggles in France to the demands of indigenous communities in Canada and South America, mapping your space means existing and defending your rights.
- Google Maps and algorithms are not mirrors of the truth. They often favor commercial interests and create information bubbles that change our perception of space based on who we are or where we are.
- There are maps that aren't there to avoid getting lost, but to find ourselves. They are the "sensitive" maps that trace emotions, fears, and people's experiences in public spaces.

Reclaiming the pencil (or mouse) to draw our world is a revolutionary act. Because changing the way we see the world is the first step to truly changing it.

[𝐂𝐂𝐃-𝐒𝐓𝐞𝐃𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐭 𝐔𝐍𝐅𝐂𝐂𝐂] 🇩🇪

In the EMJM CCD-STeDe, the second semester of the second year is dedicated to internships and thesis.

Our student of Batch 14, Cyrine, carried out her internship at UNFCCC Secretariat (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) in Bonn, Germany. She witnessed negotiations during international climate conferences, supported the organization of side events and learnt how countries engage in the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

She says: “Interning at the UNFCCC Secretariat has genuinely been one of the most enriching experiences of my academic journey. You get a holistic understanding of how the climate policy landscape works under the Paris Agreement. This made me reflect on how I want to contribute in the future. Looking forward to what comes next”.
