Tools such as GIS, drones, and satellite imagery are increasingly being adopted to make agricultural practices more sustainable. Technology-driven smart farming enables extractive agriculture to enter the era of sustainability.

The activities undertaken in this second semester by our students of Path 3 “Territorial Management” included a tour of the capital city of Burkina Faso, Ouagadogou.

The visit covered key historical sites such as the Thomas Sankara Memorial, allowing the students to learn more about the history, the culture and the social dynamics of the country.

In late May 2026, the presence of an anticyclonic system brought to several Countries in Western Europe temperatures well above the seasonal averages. At the same time, large portions of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea recorded above-average sea surface temperatures.

This visualisation, developed by data from the Copernicus Marine Service, shows sea surface temperature anomalies on 30 May 2026. The red and dark red areas indicate warmer than average waters, notably extended along the northern and western coasts of France and across parts of the western Mediterranean Sea, with anomalies in excess of 5°C above the usual temperatures for this time of year.

[𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 - 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝟏]

Last May, our students of Path 1 “Climate change, sustainability, development” took part in a workshop on hydrology design.

The activity was held at the Mine School (Palugo), where nature-based solutions have been implemented for wastewater treatment and landscape water restoration.

A theoretical session on nature-based solutions as an alternative for resilience and regeneration of degraded areas was followed by the practical session, which included:
- the visit to an infiltration wetland that acts as a firebreak for the school, serves as a natural park for children and attracts biodiversity of wetland flora and faun;
- fundamentals of design strategies for landscape water restoration;
- landscape analysis;
- planting of cuttings and aquatic plants in the chinampa wetland system;
- closing remarks and reflections.

[𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 - 𝐀𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐔𝐇𝐈𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚, 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲]

This study explored the incidence of urban heat islands (UHI) in Padua, Italy, using data from low-cost mobile sensors, later supplemented with those from Landsat 8-9 satellite imagery.

The research focused on mapping temperatures in different urban areas and at different times of the day in order to better understand the phenomenon and its dynamics. The analysis of the data, obtained through a citizen science approach, revealed the existence of a direct correlation between the heat island phenomenon and the presence of impermeable surfaces, and underscored the positive impact that vegetation can have in urban areas by significantly reducing temperatures, thanks to the elaboration of the NDVI index.

The study showed how the combination of citizen science initiatives, use of low-cost sensors and integration with satellite data can help increase awareness of the phenomenon and provide useful data for urban planning and management of the heat island phenomenon.

No próximo domingo, dia 31 de maio às 20.00h, a horta comunitaria Mãos na Terra acolhe uma projeção do documentário "Aldeias do Futuro", sobre o movimento Re.Rural e acompanha histórias de comunidades que estão a reimaginar as aldeias como lugares de partilha, pertença e possibilidade.

Este documentário retrata as iniciativas de regeneração rural em curso em Portugal, demonstrando a ligação entre as areas do interior, a agricultura e a regeneração da paisagem.

Será uma oportunidade para iniciar uma discussão e partilhar ideias sobre os espaços rurais da nossa região, bem como para inspirar práticas colaborativas e contextualizadas.

O que trazer:

*Mãos na Terra é uma horta universitária, aberta à tod@s, localizada na Quinta de São Roque da Universidade da Madeira. É um projeto socioeducativo que envolve os moradores locais com os alunos e professores da Universidade no cultivo e administração de uma horta compartilhada e de convívio. É uma forma de abrir o espaço público do campus à vizinhança e um meio de partilhar conhecimentos e experiências, facilitando a ligação entre o campus e o tecido urbano envolvente. A horta é um lugar físico para permitir a construção de uma comunidade que, a partir do trabalho prático, aprende, em conjunto, temas relacionados com a ecologia.

[𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐚 - 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝟐] 🇵🇹

Amongst the activities undertaken in the Natural Heritage course, students from Path 2 “Regional and local studies” of Batch XV visited Quinta do Santo da Serra, a local park in Madeira where a few species from the ancient and unique Laurissilva forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 20 million years old) still remain.

The visit was conducted by professor Hélder Spínola, who highlighted the importance of the local biodiversity and endemic species for the whole ecosystem balance on the island.

The Laurissilva lost most of its space due to the human occupation of the Mediterranean and North Africa, and the biggest threats to its last remains in Madeira are the invasive species and forest fires, making it fundamental to recognize its importance and enhance the protection measures.
