🚨 IMAT
The International Medical Admission Test (IMAT) is the key exam for students who want to study medicine in English in Italy. The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions in logical reasoning, general knowledge, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. It is a pen-and-paper exam held once a year, usually in September. The test fee is 130€ (or 164$ and 114£).
A high school diploma is required to sit for the IMAT, and students must have completed 12 years of education. If a candidate has attended only 11 years of school, they need to complete additional university studies before applying. The IMAT score is the only factor determining admission to medical schools in Italy. There is no age limit to sit for the IMAT, and students from any background can apply.
IMAT test centers are located in multiple countries, including Albania, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Dubai, the UK, and the USA. In Italy, the exam can be taken in cities such as Milan, Rome, Naples, Bologna, Turin, Pavia, Padova, Parma, Siena, and more. The exact locations will be confirmed closer to the exam date.
Scoring for the IMAT is as follows: +1.5 points for a correct answer, -0.4 for a wrong answer, and 0 points for unanswered questions. The minimum IMAT score required for admission varies yearly.
EU and Non-EU candidates have different application processes. Non-EU students can apply to only one university and must pre-enroll through Universitaly.it before applying for a visa. EU candidates can list multiple universities in order of preference and can move up in the ranking rounds over several months.
English language certification is not required for IMAT registration but can be beneficial in cases of score parity. Some embassies may require proof of English proficiency for visa processing. While the courses are taught in English, students will need to learn Italian for clinical training in later years.
The IMAT ranking list determines admission, and EU candidates can expect multiple ranking rounds that continue for months, whereas Non-EU students have only one ranking round. Enrollment deadlines are strict, and failing to enroll within the required time can lead to losing a place. Late enrollment is possible in some cases, with students joining classes even after the academic year begins.
