📣 The PROGRAMME for SenSArt's second international conference, “The Senses, Cognition, and the Body in Medieval Devotional Practices,” is now AVAILABLE!
The conference, organized by Zuleika Murat, Pieter Boonstra, Micol Long, and Davide Tramarin, will be held in Padua from June 5-7, 2024, and promises to be an exciting event. 😉
This interdisciplinary conference, integrating sensory studies, material culture studies, cognitive studies, and historical research, provides a rich platform for understanding the profound changes in religion during the medieval period. By exploring somatized spiritual experiences, the conference aims to shed new light on the intricate ways in which the senses, cognition, and the body were engaged in devotional practices, emphasizing the multisensory nature of medieval spirituality.

The 1st SenSArt CONFERENCE! In September 2022 the 1st SenSArt conference “The Role of the Senses in Medieval Liturgies and Rituals” was held in Padua (University of Padua, 21-23 September 2022) and organized by Zuleika Murat @zuleikamurat, Sara Carreño @sara.gorse and Valentina Baradel @valebiblabla

The aim of the conference was to explore medieval liturgies and rituals (broadly intended), through the lens of sensoria (i.e. the diverse sensory systems that existed in the Middle Ages) and the perception of the faithful (understood both as an individual and as social groups), in order to show that the experience of the sacred was not homogeneous and static. On the contrary, it was a multimodal and multisensorial activity, which was perceived in different ways by the diverse groups and individuals involved.

The meeting brought together a multi- and interdisciplinary group of scholars (art historians, historians, musicologists and liturgists) from all around the world.

Many thanks to all those who made it possible and to those who participated!
