I'm delighted to announce that the CIRCE website is finally online.
I won't spoil the experience: anyone interested in Aegean civilizations is invited to explore the site and discover, along the way, the scholars who played a pivotal role in the history of Aegean studies. Visitors can also gain an insight into the remarkable treasures preserved in our archives, many of which have already been catalogued and digitised.
The website also provides information about our fellowship programme, which offers opportunities to spend time at the Centre and make use of its library and archival collections. An English and an Italian version are available.

Dr. Tatiana Andreovits, recipient of the Anna De Sio Memorial Award 2026, has nearly completed her research stay at the CIRCE Center. We look forward to welcoming her back next year for the Second Oristano Aegean Workshop together with the other fellows of the Center, in the hope that her stay in Oristano has been fruitful and enjoyable.

We are pleased to announce that the Anna De Sio Memorial Award 2026 has been awarded ex aequo to Dr Tatiana Andreovits (PhD, Universität Heidelberg) for her project entitled “Female Life Stages and Ritual Practice in Minoan and Mycenaean Glyptic Iconography”, and to Dr Maribelisa Gillespie (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) for her project “Import, Use, and Emulation of Mycenaean Figurines in the Large Mediterranean Islands, including Cyprus, Crete, Sicily, and Sardinia, from LH IIIA–C.”
The Lucia Vagnetti Memorial Award 2026 has likewise been awarded ex aequo to Dr Marie Usadel (PhD, Ruhr University Bochum) for her research project on the Nuragic site of Grutt’i Acqua (Sardinia), and to Dr Elliot Fuller (PhD, University of Toronto) for his project “Trust, Boundaries, and Merchants: A Typological and Anthropological Study of Balance Weights in the Mycenaean World.”
We extend our warmest congratulations to all recipients and trust that the CIRCE library and archives will support the four scholars in conducting a fruitful period of research in Oristano.
The two Anna De Sio Memorial fellowships were funded by the Associazione Anna De Sio. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Prof. Francesco De Sio Lazzari for his continued support over the years.
The two Lucia Vagnetti Memorial fellowships were funded by the Municipality of Oristano.
In recent years, a growing number of researchers have chosen Oristano as a base for their work, also in light of its significant library holdings and the Olivier, Vandenabeele, Vagnetti, and van Effenterre archives.
This year, we received a large number of applications, and we regret that we were unable to fund additional research projects of considerable merit. For this reason, we plan to increase the number of fellowships to five in the coming year by reintroducing the Jean-Pierre Olivier and Frieda Vandenabeele Memorial Award 2027 for research in Aegean epigraphy and Cypriot civilisation, and by establishing a Henri and Micheline van Effenterre Memorial Award in Minoan archaeology.
In light of the growing interest among international scholars in the prehistory and protohistory of Sardinia, we have also decided to establish a fellowship in memory of Professor Giovanni Lilliu, who was among the first to recognize the profound connections between Sardinia and the Aegean world.
On 13 May, last year’s six fellows will present the results of their research in Oristano at the First Oristano Aegean Workshop, which will be preceded by a keynote lecture by Professor Pietro Militello entitled “Haghia Triada: Uno scavo di lunga durata.” The workshop will also be accessible remotely. The proceedings will be published promptly in the inaugural volume of the series I Quaderni di CIRCE.
In the coming days, we will publish the programme and the link for remote participation. The workshop will be recorded and will be available on the Centre’s website, which we will inaugurate at the end of May.
Through the provision of fellowships, the organisation of the workshop, and the annual publication of its proceedings, we aim to offer CIRCE researchers a platform through which to disseminate new research in the field of Aegean civilizations in a timely and effective manner.

Negli ultimi anni, un numero crescente di studiosi ha scelto Oristano per le proprie ricerche, anche grazie all’importante biblioteca e agli archivi Olivier, Vandenabeele, Vagnetti e van Effenterre.
Quest’anno abbiamo ricevuto numerosissime candidature da tutto il mondo e avremmo voluto avere la possibilità di finanziare anche altri progetti di ricerca che ci sono sembrati meritevoli. Per questa ragione, il prossimo anno contiamo di aumentare a cinque le borse da finanziare, riproponendo la borsa Jean-Pierre Olivier–Frieda Vandenabeele 2027 per l’epigrafia egea e l’archeologia cipriota e istituendo una nuova borsa Henri e Micheline van Effenterre per l’archeologia minoica.
Considerando il crescente interesse degli studiosi stranieri per la preistoria e la protostoria della Sardegna, abbiamo anche deciso di creare una borsa in Memoria del Prof. Giovanni Lilliu, che fu tra i primi a riconoscere le profonde connessioni tra la Sardegna e il mondo egeo.
Il 13 maggio, i sei borsisti dello scorso anno presenteranno i risultati delle loro ricerche a Oristano nel First Oristano Aegean Workshop, che sarà preceduto da una keynote lecture del prof. Pietro Militello su “Haghia Triada. Uno scavo di lunga durata”. Il workshop potrà essere seguito anche da remoto e gli atti saranno pubblicati rapidamente nel primo numero della collana “I quaderni di CIRCE”. Nei prossimi giorni pubblicheremo la locandina e il link per partecipare da remoto.
Attraverso il finanziamento delle borse, il workshop e la pubblicazione annuale degli atti, contiamo di mettere a disposizione dei ricercatori di CIRCE una tribuna per far conoscere le proprie ricerche in tempi brevi.

Just a reminder that the deadline for submitting applications for the Anna De Sio and Lucia Vagnetti Memorial Awards 2026 is February 28. CIRCE is waiting for you… but come with good intentions!

A month of research at the CIRCE center in beautiful Oristano is an experience truly worth trying.

On May 13, 2026, the six fellows who were awarded a CIRCE Center fellowship in 2025 will present their research at the First Oristano Aegean Conference. The conference will also be available online.

In the coming days, we will share further details about this new CIRCE event.

OGGETTO
Bando di concorso per l’assegnazione di un premio dedicato a una tesi di specializzazione discussa presso le Scuole di Specializzazione in Archeologia di Cagliari e Oristano, nel settore della preistoria e della protostoria della Sardegna, dell’area italica ed egea.
Il premio, finanziato dal Comune di Oristano attraverso la Fondazione Oristano, è finalizzato a sostenere gli allievi delle Scuole di Specializzazione nelle spese sostenute per la pubblicazione dei propri lavori, quali, a titolo esemplificativo: viaggi e soggiorni per periodi di studio presso musei finalizzati allo studio dei materiali, acquisto di volumi, contributo per la stampa. ecc.
La partecipazione è riservata agli autori di tesi già discusse negli anni accademici 2023/2024 e 2024/2025.
Gli interessati dovranno inviare il proprio elaborato in formato PDF al Direttore del Centro CIRCE, prof. Massimo Perna ([email protected]), entro e non oltre il 31 marzo 2026.
Il contributo economico ammonta a € 1.000,00 (mille/00).
La cerimonia di premiazione si terrà nel mese di maggio presso la sede di Oristano.
La Commissione giudicatrice sarà composta dagli attuali Direttori delle Scuole di Specializzazione in Archeologia di Cagliari e Oristano, dai due precedenti Direttori e dal Direttore del Centro CIRCE.
Ciascun componente della Commissione potrà esprimere la propria preferenza per un elaborato. Qualora non si raggiunga una maggioranza nella scelta della tesi da premiare, le due tesi che avranno ottenuto il maggior numero di preferenze saranno dichiarate vincitrici ex aequo.
Una copia delle eventuali pubblicazioni future realizzate a partire dalla tesi premiata dovrà essere inviata al Centro CIRCE.
Oltre al contributo economico, il Centro CIRCE mette a disposizione la propria biblioteca e i propri archivi a tutti coloro che intendano portare avanti le proprie ricerche.

Lucia Vagnetti Memorial Award for Research on Trade in the Mediterranean between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age

Graduate students, PhD candidates, and scholars (with no age limit) are invited to apply for the Lucia Vagnetti Memorial Award 2026, funded by the Anna De Sio Association, established to support research on Mediterranean exchange networks between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The research will be carried out at the Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca sulle Civiltà Egee “Pierre Carlier” (CIRCE) in Oristano, Sardinia.

The award funds a one-month research stay, to be carried out between April 1 and November 30, 2026. The amount of the grant is € 1,125. The award holder will be required to submit a report on their research to the Director of the CIRCE Center.

The successful applicant will have access to the CIRCE Library and its rich archive. The library houses the Jean-Pierre Olivier and Frieda Vandenabeeele collections of books and articles, as well as those of Henri and Micheline van Effenterre, Lucia Vagnetti, Paolo Belli, and Michael Wedde. It is one of the largest libraries dedicated to Aegean archaeology, the study of Mediterranean civilizations, and Sardinian archaeology. The Center also holds in particular the Lucia Vagnetti Archive.

Applications should include a Curriculum vitae and a statement outlining the proposed research program, and must be submitted by February 28, 2026, via e-mail to Prof. Massimo Perna, Director of the CIRCE Center ([email protected]).

Starting in 2025, all recipients of CIRCE Center awards will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop where they can present the results of their research. The proceedings will then be systematically published in a dedicated volume.
