Have you ever heard someone say they PASSED an exam WITH FLYING COLOURS?

“FLYING COLOURS”, you ask? Yes, you read that right! 😊

This useful idiom means to pass something (e.g. an exam, an interview, a professional qualification, a challenge or an inspection) very successfully, with excellent results!

Example: I was nervous about my English exam, but I passed with flying colours!

Why “flying colours”? This expression comes from a 17th-century naval tradition. Victorious warships returning to port would sail with their flags (or “colours”) proudly raised and flying from their masts to signal their triumph.

So, if you pass with flying colours, you don’t just pass — you pass with great success!

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS? What are those? 🤔 If you aren't sure, you're about to find out! :)

In today's post, we're looking at reflexive pronouns — myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves and themselves — and when and how to use them.

We use reflexive pronouns....

1. when the SUBJECT and the OBJECT of the VERB are the SAME.

I burned myself on the oven.
She hurt herself while playing tennis.
They enjoyed themselves at the party.

2. to emphasise that someone did something without help.

I tidied the room myself.
Tom fixed the bike himself.
We organised the whole event ourselves.

BONUS: Choose the correct reflexive pronoun in this sentence: Emma prepared / himself / yourself / herself for the exam.

SUPER BONUS: Write TWO sentences of your own using reflexive pronouns:

1. One where the subject and object are the same.
2. One where the reflexive pronoun emphasises that someone did something without help.

Today I'm sharing a quick exercise on the passive voice! 😊

Choose the correct option in each sentence. Pay attention to the tense and the structure of the passive!

TIP:
We use the passive voice when:
1. the action is more important than the person who does it or
2. we don’t know who does the action, or it isn’t important.

We form the passive voice like this:
Subject + BE (in the correct tense) + Past Participle

Today's post is about the PASSIVE VOICE — when to use it and how to form it. 😊

We use the passive voice when…
1. the action is more important than the person who does it.
2. we don’t know who does the action or it isn’t important who does it.

NOTES:

1. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.

2. When we mention who performs the action, we use BY. For example: The novel was written by Jane Austen.

3. When we have a verb that takes two objects, including ask, give, lend, offer, pay, promise, send, show and tell, either object can become the subject of the passive sentence. For example:

She gave me a present. → I was given a present. / A present was given to me.
He sent me an email. → I was sent an email. / An email was sent to me.
They showed us their new house. → We were shown their new house. / Their new house was shown to us.

BONUS: Change this sentence into the passive voice:Someone has stolen my bike!

SUPER BONUS: Write 3 different passive sentences about things that happen in your everyday life. Could you use three different tenses? 😊
