Hi, how are you? I’m doing well, and I’m here to tell you that tomorrow is Ferragosto in Italy. This holiday has its origins in the Ancient Roman Empire. Octavian Augustus was the one who established this holiday to celebrate the work of farmers. So, he set aside a day for them—which, in reality, would have been nearly ten days, if not more, dedicated to the farmers’ rest. Later, the Catholic Church added a religious observance to this day—the Assumption of the Virgin Mary—and it remains a religious celebration to this day. But the real question is: how do Italians celebrate this day? Well, Italians have a barbecue or a picnic with family or friends, either at the beach or in the mountains. In coastal towns or beach resorts, many people choose to spend the night between August 14 and 15 in a tent on the beach. That way, the next day they’re ready to spend the entire Ferragosto day at the beach—having a picnic with friends or family and maybe deciding to spend another night on the beach, waiting until midnight to watch the fireworks. And you, how do you spend Ferragosto?

Hola, ¿qué tal estás? Yo estoy bien y te escribo para decirte que mañana en Italia es Ferragosto. Este día tiene sus orígenes en el Antiguo Imperio Romano. Fue Octaviano Augusto quien instituyó esta festividad para celebrar el trabajo de los campesinos. Así que les concedió un día, que en realidad acabarían siendo casi diez, si no más, días dedicados al descanso de los agricultores. Posteriormente, la Iglesia católica añadió un evento religioso a este día, concretamente la Asunción de la Virgen María, y hoy en día sigue siendo una celebración religiosa. Pero la verdadera pregunta es: ¿cómo celebran los italianos este día? Pues bien, los italianos hacen una barbacoa o un picnic con la familia o con amigos, ya sea en la playa o en la montaña. En las ciudades costeras o balnearias, mucha gente decide pasar la noche del 14 al 15 de agosto en una tienda de campaña, en la playa. Así, al día siguiente están listos para pasar todo el día de Ferragosto en la playa; hacer un picnic con amigos o con la familia y, quizá, decidir pasar otra noche en la playa, esperando así a medianoche para ver los fuegos artificiales. ¿Y tú, cómo pasas el 15 de agosto?
