In ๐‘…๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘Ž ๐ด๐‘’๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘›๐‘Ž, Cap. 44, p. 145, ร˜rberg explains that the ๐‘–๐‘ข๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘›๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘”๐‘–๐‘– mentioned by Livy (๐ด๐‘ ๐‘ˆ๐‘Ÿ๐‘๐‘’ ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘Ž I, 42) are the sons of Tarquinius Priscus.

If this is right, Serviusโ€™ daughters would be marrying their ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ.

But Livy himself is unsure about the exact relationship:

๐Ÿ.๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ”.๐Ÿ’

Tacitus stresses that marriages between uncles and nieces were illegal in Rome until the emperor Claudius changed the rule:

Modern research (Gaudemet, Orestano, Volterra, Robleda, Daube, Thomas) shows that ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐‘๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ง ๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ ๐ž ๐ง๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ๐ž ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฑ๐ข๐›๐ฅ๐ž, especially within elite families who sought to preserve property and power.
The world Livy describes may reflect an earlier stage, where

This post is based entirely on the insights, translation, and recitation of Professor Armand Dโ€™Angour (Professor of Classics at Jesus College, University of Oxford), originally published on his Substack. It explores the idea that Catullusโ€™s โ€œlittle boatโ€ may not have been a real vessel, but a carved votive model โ€” a miniature telling a much larger story.

Swipe through to read the poem in Latin, Armandโ€™s English translation, and his interpretation.
