From today at the Capodimonte Museum, a small exhibition dedicated to Mimmo Jodice, the renowned Neapolitan master of photography, who recently passed away. The artworks on display are part of the museum collections, which have always had a special relationship with the artist.

Every year, La Capraia fellows benefit from site visits to Neapolitan archives and historical libraries. Here, we visited the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria in its incredible venue in Castel Nuovo. The Società maintains a collection of documents, scrolls, manuscripts, drawings, prints, and numerous other historical records related to Naples and southern Italy. Library Director Donatella Zampano welcomed us, while archivist Antonella Venezia and print specialist Domenico Pino (2022-2023 La Capraia fellow) guided us through this stunning collection.

Ogni anno, i borsisti e le borsiste della Capraia beneficiano di visite speciali negli archivi e nelle biblioteche storiche napoletane. In quest'occasione, abbiamo visitato la Società Napoletana di Storia Patria nella sua incredibile sede a Castel Nuovo. La Società conserva documenti, pergamene , manoscritti, disegni, stampe e numerose altre testimonianze storiche di Napoli e dell'Italia meridionale. La direttrice della biblioteca, Donatella Zampano, ci ha dato il benvenuto, mentre l'archivista Antonella Venezia e lo specialista di stampe, Domenico Pino (borsista presso La Capraia nel 2022-2023), ci hanno guidato attraverso questa straordinaria collezione.

We warmly recommend joining the "Lightning Talks" event remotely, organized by the Italian Art Society Emerging Scholars Committee, which will present papers by emerging scholars and focus on Naples' art history from medieval to contemporary.

Here, Dr. Davide Boerio, a historian specializing in the study of news production and circulation in early modern Naples, presented a seminar on the city's historical archives.

Last week, we celebrated the start of the new academic year at the Center for the Art and Architectural History of Port Cities, “La Capraia.” We welcomed our 2025-2026 Predoctoral Research Residents, Sofia Hernandez, Savannah Marquardt, Sally Tucker, and Jessica Minieri (in the first picture, from left to right).

The toast has been introduced with remarks from Eike Schmidt, Director of the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte; Francesca Santamaria, Center Coordinator, on behalf of La Capraia and Director Sarah Kozlowski; and Teresa D’Urso and Andrea Zezza on behalf of La Capraia’s Advisory Committee.

We are excited to announce that The Decorative Arts Trust has awarded its 2025 Prize for Excellence and Innovation to The Digital Porcelain Rooms Project, a collaboration between The Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD Art History) and the Custard Institute for Spanish Art and Culture at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows Museum.

The project’s goal is to reanimate and reinterpret two of the most important interiors in the canon of 18th-century decorative arts: the Salottino di Porcellana in Naples, Italy, and the Gabinete de Porcelana in Aranjuez, Spain.

The Digital Porcelain Rooms Project is a transnational, interdisciplinary effort that brings together curators, art historians, archaeologists, conservators, technologists, and cultural heritage leaders from leading museums, research institutes, and universities across Europe and the United States. The project involves the participation of the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, the Centro MUSA Musei della Reggia di Portici, the Center for the Art and Architectural History of Port Cities at La Capraia, and the Palacio Real de Madrid.

​Siamo lieti di annunciare che il Decorative Arts Trust ha assegnato il suo Premio 2025 per l'Eccellenza e l'Innovazione al progetto "The Digital Porcelain Rooms", una collaborazione tra l'Edith O'Donnell Institute of Art History dell'Università del Texas a Dallas e il Custard Institute for Spanish Art and Culture del Meadows Museum della Southern Methodist University.

We are delighted to announce that the group of 2025-2026 Predoctoral Research Residents arrived at La Capraia!

In their first week here, Sofia Hernandez (Princeton University), Jessica Minieri (Binghamton University), Savannah Sather Marquardt (Yale University), and Sally Tucker (University of California, Berkeley) visited the Museum of Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, explored the Real Bosco, and began their routine at the center.

Last weekend, our Center Coordinator, Francesca Santamaria, participated in the biannual congress of the Italian Association of Urban Studies (AISU), which was organized with the Department of Architecture at the University of Palermo. The congress, entitled "The crossroad city. Relations and exchanges, intersections and crossing points in urban realities", debated on the city as a crossroad, in the material but also metaphorical meanings, with a multi-scalar and multi-disciplinary approach, and from multiple points of view.

In a session entitled "Cities at a Crossroads: Cultural Heritage in Urban Transformation Processes Between Enhancement and Commodification", Francesca presented the project she is currently carrying on at La Capraia with Costanza Paolillo, focused on the "Art Stations" of the subway of Naples.
Designed by architects and artists, these stations constitute not only a unique example of public art but also a crucial part of the urban redevelopment planned in the late 1990s. Born to address citizens and risen to an example of overturning stereotypes about the city, in the current context of overtourism, the stations risk becoming a cultural commodity. At the same time, their role as urban infrastructure fades in the background in a tension between efficiency and spectacle, users and visitors.

Lo scorso fine settimana, la nostra coordinatrice del Centro, Francesca Santamaria, ha partecipato al congresso biennale dell'Associazione Italiana di Studi Urbani (AISU), organizzato in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Architettura dell'Università di Palermo. Il congresso, intitolato "La città crocevia. Relazioni e scambi, intersezioni e incroci nelle realtà urbane", ha affrontato il tema della città come crocevia, in senso materiale ma anche metaforico, con un approccio multiscalare e multidisciplinare e da molteplici punti di vista.

In una sessione intitolata “Città al crocevia. Il patrimonio culturale nei processi di trasformazione urbana, tra valorizzazione e mercificazione”, Francesca ha presentato il progetto che sta attualmente portando avanti a La Capraia con Costanza Paolillo, incentrato sulle “Stazioni d'Arte” della metropolitana di Napoli.
Progettate da architetti e artisti, queste stazioni costituiscono non solo un esempio unico di arte pubblica, ma anche una parte cruciale della riqualificazione urbana pianificata alla fine degli anni '90. Nate per rivolgersi ai cittadini e assurte a esempio di ribaltamento degli stereotipi sulla città, nell'attuale contesto di overtourism, le stazioni rischiano di diventare una merce culturale, mentre il loro ruolo di infrastruttura urbana passa in secondo piano in una tensione tra efficienza e spettacolo, tra utenza e visitatori.

"The Middle Ages and the Digital Humanities:
Understanding the Past, Narrating the Present"

During the Middle Ages, many urban centers, monumental complexes, communities, and institutional entities took physical shape in the built environment. However, over the course of time, campaigns of restoration, reconstruction, and reuse have transformed this material heritage, reconfiguring and repurposing spaces, reshaping decorative and iconographic programs, and reorienting relationships between monuments and surrounding urban and natural landscapes. In this process, material traces of the past are sometimes erased altogether, and sometimes “absorbed” into the physical evolution of the built environment, forming part of the rich and complex stratigraphy of our historic centers. In both cases, it can be challenging to interpret the surviving physical and documentary evidence, and even more challenging to narrate such complex histories of the material past. In recent decades, art historians have used digital technologies in various ways and on a range of scales to understand and reconstruct the earlier forms of monuments and the built environment, whether extant or lost, as well as to communicate the material past in ways that are intuitive, effective, and scientifically grounded. This work has allowed scholars to test and refine working hypotheses; at the same time, it has allowed communities to reengage with significant aspects of their own cultural memory and identity.

Taking as a point of departure their experience leading The Medieval Kingdom of Sicily Image Database, the chairs of this session aim to bring together for discussion projects in the field of art history that use digital technologies to document, interpret, and/or reconstruct medieval monuments and sites. The chairs welcome presentations on projects that represent a range of geographies (including Italy, Europe, and the Mediterranean), art historical problems, and methodological approaches, and that shed light on projects’ scopes, working methods, technologies, and strategies for communicating research and engaging audiences.

On the second day of the field seminar “Unruly Iconographies”, several presentations were held in the most important medieval churches and chapels of Naples: Santa Restituta, Santa Chiara, San Pietro a Majella, and the Palatine Chapel of Castel Nuovo. The day ended with a session dedicated to manuscripts hosted at the Sala Galasso of the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria. The following day, part of the group visited the nuns' choir of the church of Donna Regina.

In this series of presentations, participants investigated questions including so-called exceptions, hapaxes, mistakes, and lost originals; the circulation of iconographies through polycentric cultural networks; the translation of motifs across mediums, formats, functional contexts, and audiences; and the mechanisms of transfer, including mobile artworks, artists, and patrons.

Nel secondo giorno del seminario "Iconografie Indisciplinate", si sono tenute alcune presentazioni nelle più importanti chiese e cappelle medievali di Napoli: Santa Restituta, Santa Chiara, San Pietro a Majella e nella Ca****la Palatina di Castel Nuovo. La giornata si è conclusa con una sessione dedicata ai manoscritti ospitata presso la Sala Galasso della Società Napoletana di Storia Patria. Il giorno dopo, parte del gruppo ha visitato il coro delle monache della chiesa di Donna Regina.

In questa serie di presentazioni, i partecipanti hanno approfondito questioni quali le cosiddette eccezioni, gli hapax, gli errori e gli originali perduti; la circolazione delle iconografie attraverso reti culturali policentriche; la traduzione dei motivi attraverso mezzi, formati, contesti funzionali e pubblici diversi; i meccanismi di trasferimento, tra cui la mobilità di opere, artisti e mecenati.
