This altar from the late 6th Century BCE was found end excavated after being deliberately tossed in a well during antiquity. After letting it dry, and upon cleaning, the students discovered a “Sigla” in the form of an X.
What could it mean?

In this video, Poggio Civitate site Director Dr. Anthony Tuck from Umass Amherst discusses how we find all elements of pottery production on site from the Archaic period, late 6th century BCE. From raw clay, accidentally fired during a burning event, to pottery wheel parts, finished products like pottery, Terracotta and buchero. XRF examinations have proven that all the pottery has the same chemical signature. Most interesting is how the raw clay still bears the finger and thumb prints of the people who last touched them approximately 2600 years ago. Finding artifact like these truly brings history alive.

Site Archeologist performs XRF (X-ray Florescence) on an iron nail found in trench 131 by while sifting spoils.
XRF determines the elemental composition in a wide variety of objects. In this case, by switching to the metal alloys setting, Brad revealed that this nail is likely Etruscan and possibly dates to the second half of the 6th century BCE, Archaic period.
Brad is currently testing a wide variety of objects from the archives collected over the past 60 years. This will create a data set that can be used to compare various objects found in the field.
