Il Sasso - Italian Language School One of the best Italian language schools in Italy. Since 1983 it has offered courses in Italian language and culture. Learn Italian in Tuscany @ Il Sasso

The Italian language school Il Sasso is located in Montepulciano, a beautiful, renaissance town that stands on a hill surrounded by vineyards and olive groves in southern Tuscany. The school was founded in 1983 by people who are still running it today, and it is recognized by the Ministry of Education. Il Sasso is a small to medium size Italian school with a high standard of quality. Foreign students are of every age group and come from all parts of the globe. The school is in an historic building in the heart of the town. It has 8 large, airy classrooms for Italian language courses, individual tuition and culture courses and a hall that's used for conferences, exhibitions and events. There's a terrace with a lovely panoramic view - a favourite place for students to take their class breaks during the summer months - as well as an Internet point, free WiFi access and the opportunity to study the Italian language or watch a film at the school at any time throughout the day. In addition, the school offers its students the chance to pass their afternoons together through a wide variety of excursions and afternoon activities - guided tours, w**e, olive oil and cheese tastings, cooking classes, walks in the countryside... For fitness enthusiasts the gym in Montepulciano offers our students discounts and special courses. Lessons are conducted by teachers, all university graduates, and specialized in the teaching of Italian as a foreign or second language, who are particularly experienced in instructing adult students. The Italian language courses are geared to those who want a cultural vacation in Tuscany while learning how to get by in Italian in day-to-day situations, as well as to those who wish to learn Italian for their work or studies through a full immersion program. The method of communication, and the friendly and personal atmosphere of the lessons make our courses a very special, human and cultural experience that's different each time. The school's secretary offers constant and active support to students, advising them in their choice of lodgings or planning their trips. While being a centre of tourist activity, the town maintains a relaxed and friendly lifestyle and it is, above all, genuinely welcoming to foreign visitors. For all these reasons, we're convinced that Montepulciano and Il Sasso offer the ideal location in which to study the Italian language and culture. The proof of this is in the large number of students who return year after year.

Tour guide for a day! 🗺️
A special lesson in the open air: notes in hand, our students took turns guiding their classmates around Montepulciano, sharing the stories and secrets of its historic landmarks right where they happened. From the Torre di Pulcinella, the clock tower just opposite our school, to the Etruscan and Roman reliefs on Palazzo Bucelli and the Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leoni in Piazza Grande, every stop had its own cicerone. 🏛️

In Italian, a cicerone is a tour guide. The word comes from Cicero, the great Roman orator, playfully evoking the eloquence of someone who loves to talk! 😉

A fun way to practise speaking, build confidence and experience Italian culture from the inside.

Bravissimi, ciceroni! 🇮🇹

Guida per un giorno! 🗺️

Bravissimi tutti i nostri ciceroni! 🇮🇹

After learning the present tense, we took pen and paper out into town. 📝
The mission: look around, describe what you see, and make it fun. Eight verbs (mangiare, correre, andare, parlare, uscire, pensare, salire, osservare) and a whole town to describe. 👀
What do you see around you right now?

• •

Dopo aver imparato il presente, carta, penna e occhi aperti! 📝
E tu, cosa vedi intorno a te?

Where does this passage lead? 🏰

We crossed into Umbria for an afternoon tour in Castiglione del Lago, on the shores of Lake Trasimeno.

We started inside Palazzo della Corgna, a Renaissance palace with frescoed ceilings, then followed the covered walkway that leads from the palace to the Rocca del Leone (the Lion Fortress), the medieval castle overlooking the lake.

Up on the walls: stone steps, battlements and the lake opening up on every side 🌊

We ended with a short walk through the old town at sunset, and the light did the rest 🌅

Dove porta questo passaggio? 🏰

In autumn, the woods around here turn gold almost overnight. 🍂

The beech leaves go from yellow to amber, the paths disappear under copper leaves and, after the first rains, the streams start running again. It's mushroom and chestnut season, and the hill villages celebrate with festivals and roasted chestnuts.

Not everyone knows that Monte Amiata, an old volcano covered in beech and chestnut woods, is about an hour from Montepulciano. These photos were taken there.

Autumn in Tuscany is quieter than summer: crisp mornings, warm light, no rush. A good time to learn Italian in a small group, at your own level.

Our autumn courses run through mid-December. 🗓️ Not sure which week or level is right for you? Send us a message and we'll help you choose.

I corsi d'autunno proseguono fino a metà dicembre. Scrivici e ti aiutiamo a scegliere.

Almost Autumn 🍂

We set off on foot with our students from San Biagio, the Renaissance church just below Montepulciano, and followed the dirt roads to the park of Villa Trecci. We spoke Italian the whole way: about what we saw, the colors of early autumn, the path ahead.

Warm light, the perfect temperature, no hurry. ☀️

Quasi autunno 🍂

Luce calda, temperatura perfetta, nessuna fretta. ☀️

Our next book club read is Acciaio (Steel) by Silvia Avallone 📖

Piombino, on the Tuscan coast. Anna and Francesca are fourteen and inseparable, growing up in the housing blocks of via Stalingrado, in the shadow of the steelworks that keep half the town going. Their bodies are changing, and beauty becomes something to hide or to use. A night at the roller rink feels like the whole world. Then love arrives, and even their friendship begins to waver.

It's Avallone's first novel, set in a working-class Italy that rarely makes it into books. It won the Campiello Prize for best debut in 2010 and was runner-up for the Premio Strega, Italy's best-known literary award.

We read it together online, with our teachers. Not a literature course, a conversation. Recommended from intermediate level (B1) up.

🗓 From Tuesday 3 November, 18.45 Italy / 12.45 pm New York
👥 Groups of 4 to 10 people

☕ Buongiorno!

When a new course begins, we start like this: breakfast together with the new students and teachers, in the entrance hall of the historic palazzo that houses our school.

A coffee, a bit of chatting, and then off to class, with a magnificent view framing the lesson.

And don't forget: our courses run all year round, for all levels.

Can an Italian lesson make you this happy? Judging by these faces, yes. 😊

👩‍🍳 Our students added the kitchen to the classroom, with the chef of a local restaurant as their teacher. She explained it all in Italian, and her hands translated the rest.

🍝 Together they made tagliatelle by hand, to eat later with ragù. They also learned to "appiciare", the Tuscan dialect word for rolling pici (thick spaghetti) by hand, to serve all'aglione, made with the large, mild garlic typical of the Valdichiana.

Then the best part: tasting it all, with ciambelline al vino (w**e cookies) and a glass of Vin Santo, Tuscany's sweet dessert w**e.

A big thank you to Angela and Porta di Bacco for such a tasty lesson!

Late afternoon, in the vineyards just outside Montepulciano. The lesson had moved outdoors, as it often does with us: new words, questions, and a lot of Italian spoken out loud along the rows.

Then everyone stopped. A young roe deer was standing a few steps away, in the grass between two rows. It stayed there, calm, looking back at us.

In Italian it's called capriolo 🦌. An easy word to learn, when the animal is right there in front of you.

Our group courses run all year round: small groups, all levels, and plenty of hours outside the classroom.
🥾 walks in town and in the countryside
🍷 w**e tastings
🍝 cooking lessons
🎨 talks and visits to places of art and nature

Tardo pomeriggio, nelle vigne appena fuori Montepulciano.

È rimasto fermo, tranquillo, a guardarci.

🥾 passeggiate in città e in campagna
🍷 degustazioni
🍝 lezioni di cucina
🎨 conferenze e visite in luoghi d'arte e natura
