Over the past three years, the SAWE Jean Monnet Module has brought together students, researchers and practitioners across Europe to explore animal welfare law and ethics through three Summer Schools — each one opening a different angle on a field that continues to evolve alongside our understanding of animals and their place in society.
On 16 July 2026, we will conclude this journey with the SAWE Final Conference: Animal Welfare Law and Ethics — Reflecting on European Concepts.
The conference is conceived as an opportunity for dialogue rather than a series of formal presentations. Bringing together the project team and the wider community, it will provide a space to look back on the main themes emerged across the three Summer Schools, discuss current developments in animal welfare, law and ethics stands today, and explore future perspectives and possible new initiatives building on the SAWE experience.
Alongside a few introductory contributions, there will be ample opportunity for discussion, exchange of ideas and interaction with participants.
👥 Who should join
This conference is open to anyone interested in animal welfare law and ethics: professionals, early-career researchers and PhD candidates, and recent graduates who want to engage with current developments in the field and to exchange ideas with colleagues from different backgrounds.
🔄 Please, feel free to share this invitation with colleagues and students and anyone who might be interested.
We look forward to welcoming you on 16 July.

🐾 What could an increasingly animal-centric vision mean for Europe?
Across Europe, discussions on animal welfare, sustainability, ethics, and public policy are becoming more closely connected than ever before. As these conversations evolve, they raise important questions about the future of our societies and institutions.
How might an animal-centric perspective influence EU policies? What impact could it have on legislation, governance, research, education, and the relationship between humans and animals?
These questions will be explored during the SAWE Summer School 2026 Round Table
Bringing together experts from different disciplines, the Round Table aims to foster an open and stimulating exchange of perspectives on one of the most timely issues in contemporary policy and animal welfare.
We look forward to welcoming everyone interested in this important conversation.

🐶🐱🐾 🐠🐤 There are more than 60 million companion animals living in Italy.
Yet their presence is still only marginally recognised as either a potential risk or a source of health benefits.
What implications does this have for a truly integrated One Health approach?
At the Summer School in Animal Welfare and Ethics, we explored these questions.

It is truly rewarding to see participants from different disciplines engaging so actively with questions surrounding animal welfare, ethics, law and One Health, and to see them bring their diverse perspectives into dialogue throughout the week.
