Many photographers are conservative when it comes to present their projects, not realizing that their work isn’t their actual work until it is presented. On the other hand, many designers have difficulties in determining their role....
Together with Arthur Herrman - from Ku**er & Herrman - we will research different solutions for the presentation of your work: book, exhibition, web documentary and even transmedia.

"When I think about what 'good reading' means to me, it is literature that takes me somewhere, whether internally (it makes me understand something about myself), or literature that shows me another way to see. And “good reading” is often re-reading: finding my way backs to books I discovered years ago. I wouldn’t say that reading is a pastime—it’s up there with breathing."

Why We're Still in Love with Picture Books
Maybe now, while we’re all running around wringing our hands and wondering if picture books are dead, it’s time to declare our love for them.

Illustrating Picture Books: Filling in the Gaps

Workshop with Chronicle Books Editor Naomi Kirsten
The Art and Alchemy of Creating a Picture Book:
From Pitch to Publication
The picture book genre is deceptively simple: The creative process is undeniably complex. A picture book author or illustrator must cover a vast expanse of thematic, conceptual, and narrative territory within a discrete
landscape all while heeding the horizon: the readers who will ultimately experience the work. But what should be the driving forces as the creator embarks on this journey? The expectations of a prospective publisher? The readers’ whims? The project’s original vision? We will explore this artful negotiation as well as other key creative considerations during this 3-day workshop with the ultimate goals of developing a comprehensive understanding of the World English Children’s picture book and novelty market, crafting a solid pitch to present to prospective publishers, expanding the possibilities of a singular work, and revising a current in work-in-progress for submission to a publisher.
Naomi Kirsten is an editor at Chronicle Books in San Francisco, California. She acquires approximately 25 titles each year, ranging from picture books to novelty formats and stationery. Naomi’s recent and upcoming titles include Ice Sabers, a project she originated for the Star Wars franchise; Cat Says Meow; Yeti, Turn Out the Light!; I Didn’t Do My Homework Because… with Davide Cali and Benjamin Chaud; Lately Lily: The Adventures of a Travelling Girl; the World English editions of Germano Zullo and Albertine’s Line 135 and Jumping Jack; the World English edition of Céclie Boyer’s Run, Dog!; and The Bear’s Song, which was a Kirkus Best Book of the Year, an Amazon Best Book of the Year, and a New York Times Notable Book. She also develops ancillary and publishing programs with Marc Boutavant, Moomin, Lately Lily (www.latelylily.com), and Boo the Dog (www.facebook.com/Boo), among others. Workshop objectives:
*Develop a solid picture book pitch for submission to a publisher. Each participant will have the opportunity to present 1 project to editor Naomi Kirsten for her list at Chronicle Books.
*Gain a deeper understanding of the publication process once a project is acquired by a publisher.
*Explore what international picture books are currently resonating with the World English market, and apply that knowledge to your project’s development.
*Expand the possibilities for your project: Formulate ways to envision a series or related ancillary program from a stand-alone work.
For the workshop, please prepare a brief description of your project as well as a full draft of the manuscript (if applicable), and, if an illustrator, illustration samples and/or project.
Cost: € 300
