The Formula of Creation — in dialogue with Michelangelo Pistoletto and Ruggero Poi from Fondazione Pistoletto Cittadellarte PEA Pedagogy Ecology and the Arts conference “polis” - 2023.
This year, the PEA Conference explores the theme of Praxis, continuing a journey that began with last year’s focus on Power.
Last year, “power” invited us to question kratos — power itself — and to explore how it might be transformed into responsibility, participation and the capacity to create change.
Michelangelo Pistoletto’s thinking offers a powerful perspective on this transition: from kratos to praxia, from democracy to demopraxia. Not simply a different form of government, but a practice — a way of acting together, taking responsibility and creating transformation through relationships.
The book collecting the reflections from last year’s PEA Conference on “power” has just been published by FrancoAngeli. It marks an important step in a path that this year moves from Power towards Praxis.
In dialogue with Edgar Morin, Pistoletto brings this reflection into the realm of the ecological and complex thinking that inspires PEA: a way of thinking that does not separate, but connects; that recognises the interdependence between individuals, communities, nature and culture.
The Formula of Creation thus becomes more than a reflection on art. It becomes a possible formula for the future: transforming the way we think in order to transform the way we act — and turning individual action into shared practice.
This is the space in which PEA continues its research: between thought and action, power and practice, the individual and the community.

It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Thomas Emmenegger as a keynote speaker at the PEA Conference “praxis.”
Thomas Emmenegger is a psychiatrist and President of Olinda, a social cooperative that has played a central role in transforming the former Paolo Pini Psychiatric Hospital in Milan into an open space for culture, community, social inclusion, and care.

A central part of this experience is Da vicino nessuno è normale (“Up Close, Nobody Is Normal”), the theatre and cultural festival created at the former psychiatric hospital. Since its beginnings in the 1990s, the festival has used theatre and culture to open the gates of the institution, bring the city into the former hospital, and create new relationships between art, mental health, and community life. Emmenegger’s work offers a powerful example of praxis: transforming the principles of deinstitutionalisation, inclusion, and human dignity into concrete cultural and social practices. His experience invites us to ask how art and culture can contribute to changing institutions, spaces, and relationships.

It is a great pleasure to welcome Marijana Grandits as one of our keynote speakers at the PEA Conference “praxis.”
Marijana Grandits is an Austrian human rights activist, politician, and advocate for peace, democracy, and social justice. Her long-standing engagement in human rights and political life offers an important perspective on the relationship between cultural expression, political action, and social transformation.

Her contribution is particularly meaningful in the context of the Master’s programme in Art and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, where we explore how artistic and cultural practices can engage with human rights, challenge structures of power, and create spaces for critical reflection and action.

Her work embodies precisely this understanding of praxis: connecting critical thinking with political and social engagement.

It is a pleasure to welcome Professor Michele Nicoletti as a keynote speaker at the PEA Conference “praxis.”
Michele Nicoletti is Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Trento. His research focuses on political philosophy, ethics, human rights, democracy, and the relationship between philosophical thought and political action.

His work addresses fundamental questions of human dignity, responsibility, solidarity, and the ethical foundations of democratic life. These themes are particularly relevant to the idea of praxis at the heart of our conference: the relationship between critical reflection and action, and the role of thought in shaping a more just and democratic society.

He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and Coordinator of the Human Rights Group at the Centro Studi di Politica Internazionale (CeSPI). He also maintains a collaborative relationship with the Council of Europe through the Council of Europe Academic Networking (CEAN) project, which he launched during his term as President.

It is a great pleasure to welcome Dr. Samah Jabr as our keynote speaker at the PEA Conference “praxis.”
Dr. Jabr is a Palestinian psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and writer, and a leading voice on mental health, human rights, and the psychological dimensions of oppression and political violence. Through her clinical work and public engagement, she has consistently connected individual mental health with the social, political, and historical conditions in which people live.

Her work also speaks deeply to the concept of Sumud—a Palestinian notion of steadfastness, resilience, and the determination to remain rooted and to continue resisting in the face of oppression. In this sense, Sumud can be understood as a form of praxis: a way of transforming suffering and experience into collective strength, dignity, and action.

Her perspective challenges us to think of psychiatry not only as a clinical practice, but also as a practice of human rights, dignity, and social justice.
