I never know how to talk about places and traditions that I don’t know through extended, direct experience. So I wrote a draft for this post and I sent it to a Sicilian friend.

ME: Can I ask your advice? I need to write a post about Sicily, and I don't want to come across as one of those "Oh my God, Sicily is amazing, wow, wow, wow" types. [Sending her the post]. Does it make sense, or is it a bit too romanticized?
HER: To me, it makes sense; perhaps you could say a few words for those who have stayed and do their best to make a change.

Because I didn’t really know what to say, and I didn’t want to be stating the obvious, I decided to wait to actually be in Sicily and get inspired. Yes, I could tell you about all those who fight against organized crime, but I think you already know about that, possibly much better than myself. So I will just say that Sicily is one of those places that you need to go to, or else you won't even be able to write a post about it. I have, and I'm still speechless.

Ecco. Io con Giulia ho decisamente esagerato. 😂

Avventure, merende, misfatte, un business, un’amicizia, un bagno e, in casi estremi, pure un letto. (È andata peggio a lei: io parlo nel sonno! 😂)

Insomma, se non conosci Giulia, non sai cosa ti perdi. E quindi… eccola qui, per un primo assaggio. ❤️

Io e Giulia siamo andate insieme nel 2024 in Salento, con mia mamma, Adriana, Illya, Elke, Gabi, Valerie e Céline.

Quest’anno siamo a Palermo, con 4 studentesse nuove (Jade, Natascha, Deborah e Rós), e per il 2027 abbiamo già mille progetti in cantiere. 🤯

Il giorno e la notte. Lo yin e lo yang. Due opposti che, in realtà, sono molto più simili di quanto sembri.

Io e Giulia: il duo dinamico che non sapevi di meritarti. 🫶🏻

You know those people you end up sharing basically EVERYTHING with?
Well. I may have taken things a little too far with Giulia. 😂

Adventures, snacks, mischief, a business, a friendship, a bathroom and, in extreme cases, even a bed. (It was definitely worse for her: I talk in my sleep! 😂)

Anyway, if you don’t know Giulia, you don’t know what you’re missing. So… here she is, just to give you a little taste. ❤️

Giulia and I went to Salento together in 2024, with my mum, Adriana, Illya, Elke, Gabi, Valerie and Céline. 

This year we are in Palermo, with 4 new students (Jade, Natascha, Deborah and Rós), and we already have a thousand projects in the works for 2027. 🤯

Day and night. Yin and yang. Two opposites who, in reality, are much more alike than they seem.

🇮🇹 Da oggi c'è una grande novità nella mia vita: riprendo un master in linguistica cognitiva che avevo sospeso. In altre parole: torno all'università!
Torno all'università perché:

📚 Anche se volte sono incostante e nei grandi progetti ho bisogno di pause, studiare mi è sempre piaciuto tantissimo e mi fa sentire viva

📚 Insegnare l'italiano non è solo insegnare l'italiano, ma anche capire a fondo come funziona il nostro cervello quando impariamo una lingua, e usare questa conoscenza per essere un'insegnante migliore

📚 I libri hanno un buon odore

📚 Quando studio, sono bellina
🇬🇧 There's big news in my life: I'm going back to uni to conclude a master's degree programme in cognitive linguistics. I'm going back to uni because:

📚 Even if sometimes I'm not constant with big projects, I've always loved studying, it makes me feel alive

📚 Teaching Italian is not just about Italian, but about how our minds process language learning, and using this knowledge to be a better teacher

📚 Books smell good

📚 I look cute when I'm studying

💃 Il ballo è sempre stato qualcosa di molto difficile per me, poi grazie a ho scoperto la gioia del movimento, che mi ha aiutata a socializzare in un paese straniero, a imparare parole che ho usato anche fuori dalle lezioni di ballo (pegar, llevar, venga va, ca**ón 😂...)! 🇪🇦

La ripetizione costante di parole associata a vedere veramente le persone fare quelle cose è uno strumento molto potente di apprendimento di una lingua straniera!
E tu? Balli? Balli in un paese straniero? In quali modi questo ti ha aiutat* a imparare meglio la lingua, o anche la cultura, di quel paese?
