One question keeps coming back while I'm working on this.
What actually makes a piece of music suitable for a listening-based approach?
In many contexts, certain composers or repertoires have become part of established practice. That's understandable. But the more I read, the more I wonder whether that's only part of the picture.
How much depends on the composer? How much on the score? The interpretation? The performance? The recording?
Or could some of the answer lie in measurable acoustic characteristics rather than in the composer's name?
Over the last few months I've been reading the original literature, comparing different perspectives, and building tools to explore these questions from an acoustic point of view.
I don't have an answer yet.
Actually, every paper I read seems to generate a few more questions.
For now, I'm happy to stay there.
Still a work in progress. 🎧
