This video from Ari has so much misinformation and dangerous advice that we had to respond.

We have so much opinions in this sport from people that don't know what their talking about. That sometimes we have to say something publicly. This specific case is one of those.

Malin is one of the most experienced SIV instructors in the world. And by far the most analytic, I've had the pleasure of working with.

Malin Lobb has made a response to this Ari's video.

Tricia came to us July 2024. She was a new pilot.

Over the last two years, her progress has been amazing to watch. Someone with her schedule to be able to add paragliding to the list isn't easy one bit.

It takes so much dedication to get to this point.

Now, she's getting comfortable with the full limits of the wing during SIV's. Consistency in XC flying and even done a few competitions.

My job is to get you to a place where you don't need me anymore. Tricia is doing the work.

Ever wanted to see how it feels to throw your reserve?

During an SIV coures is best place to test it out.

It's not the mistakes we do that counts. It's what we do after that matters!

Our course curriculum is built as a stepping stones, eatch exercise preparing you for the next. By the time you get to more dynamic moves, you know what to expect and how to deal with it when things dose not go your way.

Stall to backfly in four stages. Pierce, hands up, choke, backfly.
The pilot in this clip is doing it for the first time.

For years, we have taught it in two moves. Slow the wing to minimum speed, punch it through, ease up, then straight into backfly. It works. It also feels aggressive, because you start from a wing that is already on the edge and then you hit it. It throws you around more this way. And you learn less about what the wing is actually doing.

We where not happy with this way and we thought it could be done better, and we were experimenting with different approaches last session.

Then, last May, we went back to Malin Lobb to shadow him and have a chat about how to improve. He had allready came up with a solution.

This session we switched. Start at trim speed. Pierce it in one go. Hands up. Choke it. Bring it into the backfly. Four stages, and you can feel each one.

The entry is cleaner, there is less violence in it, and you get the time to understand how the wing behaves on the way instead of just surviving the moment.

It is also closer to real life. In thermic air you would not have the time to slow the wing down first. You go from trim.

To me, this is how backfly training should evolve. Closer to what happens in the wild, more controlled, and it is not throwing you around. This is how I enter them myself.

This was the first course where we taught it this way.

Most pilots meet their first spin by accident.

To me that is backwards. A spin you understand is a tool. It turns the wing fast when you need to be somewhere other than where you are, which matters the day someone flies at you and there is no other exit. And when one does catch you out, your hands already know the answer, because you have been there on purpose, over water, with a boat underneath you.

The more we play with spins, the less likely we are to spin one by accident.

Once rotations, collapses have been trained and understood, we move on to autorotations !

In this video, the pilot has already completed several autorotations and is now working on full understanding of the manoeuvre as a choice.

GRAND ADVENTURE AUGUST
The Grand Adventure is open for August. 1st to 9th.
Quick story on why this is landing in your inbox in June for an August trip.

We had a competition planned for these dates and it got cancelled. At the same time, a few of you told me you wanted to do the Grand Adventure this year, but the trip we are starting this Saturday was full. So instead of leaving those August dates empty, we're offering to run the Grand Adventure instead.

Here is what it is. Nine days, seven of them flying, from Nice to Geneva across the French Alps. We pick you up at Nice airport, the van carries the gear, and we chase the best weather across the range. You bring your own camping kit, packed small. Some nights are a campsite, some a hotel, some a field. €2,250.

It is not a soft trip. The days are long, there is a lot of driving, and you fly on your own judgment. You read the valley, pick your landing, and decide for yourself. You make the calls with us about the Weather, the next take-off, the route, where we sleep, detailed debrief after each flight. You leave flying the Alps better than you arrived.

Here’s the very first step we work on during our SIV courses: rotations.

They allow you to understand all the axes of your wing and build the foundations needed to progress safely, without rushing. It may look simple, but once these fundamentals are mastered, everything else becomes easier and your progression becomes much faster.

We believe in adapting the training to you, not just ticking boxes. If you’re looking for a safe, progressive SIV course adapted to your needs, come and join us.
