In this archaeological field school, you explore the archaeology of mountain society with an international team while doing pedestrian survey and geophysical prospection in the hills and mountains of the Central Apennines. Although the focus of the project is on research, not on teaching, the high staff-student ratio provides ample room for learning in practice. It consists of intensive field and lab work: mainly pedestrian field survey, as well as the study of the finds and GIS documentation in the lab, and geophysical prospection.
BA, (R)MA and PhD students in Archaeology, Ancient History, Classics, Geoarchaeology and related fields enrolled at one of the KNIR partner universities in the Netherlands are encouraged to apply.

Op donderdag 27 augustus 2026 organiseert het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden een 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐎𝐝𝐲𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐞-𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐧𝐝!

De Odyssee-avond staat in het teken van het kunstproject ODYSSEUS van KNIR Artist-in-Residence Elisa Pesapane. Om 19.30 uur zal er een kunstdialoog plaatsvinden met Elisa Pesapane en prof. Frans Willem Korsten (Universiteit Leiden) en daarna is het genieten van een borrel met Italiaanse deuntjes. 💃🎶
Tijdens deze avond zullen tevens alle zalen van het museum geopend zijn.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the publication of 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐥. 𝟕𝟓 of our KNIR Fellow, Dr Dario Monti. 🥳

The book, 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘮𝘦: 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦, 𝘚𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 (Quasar), is based on Dario’s PhD dissertation, which he defended in 2024 at the Université catholique de Louvain. His doctoral research, centred on the inland region of Sabina in the central Apennines, explored how ancient mountain communities organised their settlement systems, economies, and social structures in relation to both environmental constraints and cultural choices. Moving beyond traditional narratives that frame upland regions as marginal or underdeveloped, it approached these communities as dynamic and adaptive, shaped through ongoing socio-ecological interactions and historically specific trajectories.

De 𝐖𝐈𝐒 𝐎𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐳𝐨𝐞𝐤𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐣𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 wordt dit jaar toegekend aan een publicatie op het gebied van de 𝐭𝐚𝐚𝐥- 𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐤𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞 die is verschenen in de periode van 𝟏 𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐭𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐭 𝟑𝟏 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓.

De prijs wordt gesponsord door het Istituto Italiano di Cultura Amsterdam en omvat een oorkonde én een onderzoeksbeurs van € 𝟏.𝟎𝟎𝟎, die de winnaar naar eigen inzicht kan besteden aan reiskosten en/of de aanschaf van boeken. Eind 2023 verbleef 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐚 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐥 als 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭-𝐢𝐧-𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 aan het KNIR om te schrijven aan haar boek. Ze was geselecteerd voor het residency-programma van het Fonds Bijzondere Journalistieke Projecten en kon zich daarom zes weken onderdompelen in een journalistiek project dat betrekking heeft op Rome en/of Italië. De uitkomst van dit project ligt nu in de boekhandel. Rosa's boek 𝘝𝘪𝘢 𝘐𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢. 𝘐𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪ë 𝘷𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘫 𝘱𝘪𝘻𝘻𝘢, 𝘮𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘰𝘴𝘪 𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘤𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘢 is een journalistieke reis door het echte Italië, voorbij de bekende clichés.

The city of Rome from the 1st to the 9th century CE forms an ideal testing ground to think about migration and mobility. Rome had many faces, but throughout its long history it was always a cosmopolis. While the symbolic appeal of the city remained strong, during the longue durée the cityscape underwent radical changes, transforming from a capital of a huge empire into the centre of western Christianity. The aim of this inter-disciplinary course offered by KNIR and the Norwegian Institute in Rome is to identify how migration and mobility manifest themselves in material, visual, and textual evidence.

We warmly congratulate our Associated Researcher Flavia Palazzini on succesfully completing her PhD research entitled 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘰 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘦-𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘦 𝘛𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘢 (𝘛𝘈). 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘥𝘪 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪 𝘥𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘷𝘪 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘪 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘶𝘯𝘢 𝘯𝘶𝘰𝘷𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦 at the Sapienza Università di Roma. Her dissertation focused on the Bronze Age sites of Torre Castelluccia and Porto Perone-Satyrion (Taranto), combining archival research, the recovery and integration of legacy excavation data, and the renewed analysis of archaeological materials to shed new light on the history of these two key contexts in Italian protohistory.

The international conference Settler Colonial Paradigms (SECOPS) (University of Groningen, May 21-23, 2026) has been captured in images by Prof Clemens Six. Several of his photographs are now published on our website. As the images show, we look back at a very inspiring conference, with two days of interesting and diverse papers and constructive discussions, followed by a third day with an excursion to the Dutch Colonies of Benevolence.
