From 9 October 2026 to 7 February 2027, the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome will host the first major monographic exhibition ever devoted to Jacopo Carrucci, known as Pontormo (1494-1557). To coincide with this landmark exhibition, Prof. Elizabeth Pilliod (Rutgers University, Camden), author of two books on Pontormo and a contributor to the exhibition, will give a public lecture at KNIR reassessing the artist’s life, reputation and work, challenging long-standing misconceptions and presenting new insights into his artistic practice and the lost frescoes of San Lorenzo.

⏰Apply now for the Winter School 𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢!

In this course, we will discuss the many ways to approach and think about the rich cultural heritage of Rome. No other place in the world has played such an important role in the development of Western culture, from antiquity until today. Participants will actively become acquainted with the fascinating past and present of Rome, visiting a series of famous and less-known sites.

BA students of all disciplines from our partner universities are encouraged to apply.

On Thursday, 17 September we officially kicked-off the academic year by meeting our Fellows, Associated Researchers, Artist in Residence, and the first cohort of new KNIR scholarship holders.The KNIR team is looking forward to new and exciting collaborations in the academic field.

The roundtable 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝟐 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝟏𝟕.𝟎𝟎 𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐓) is organized by our Museum Fellows, Rosa Anna Di Lella and Gaia Delpino (Museo delle Civiltà), and focuses on provenance research to reflect on the formation of contested collections and their acquisition processes connected with imperialism and colonialism. Reconstructing the history of museum objects means examining the specific, often contentious circumstances of their acquisition. It requires tracing their movements and uncovering the power dynamics, colonial networks, and human relationships that shaped their trajectories. How can we reconstruct these complex object biographies today? Who conducts this research, through which sources, and how can the findings be transparently shared with the public? Furthermore, what does transparency actually mean in this context, and to what extent is it truly achievable?
Bringing together museum professionals and scholars, this roundtable examines concrete provenance research cases involving African and American collections held by institutions in Italy and the Netherlands. Through diverse experiences and perspectives, the panel will reflect on current methodologies and discuss how modern museums can critically address and make visible the fragmented histories of the objects they hold.

This interdisciplinary course explores the intersection of ancient Rome and Renaissance Florence through the lens of Medici patronage, focusing on the Pazzi Conspiracy (1478) and its classical reception. Students will examine how Angelo Poliziano, a key humanist in the Medici entourage, reinterpreted Sallust’s account of the Catiline Conspiracy to shape public opinion following the attack on Lorenzo de’ Medici. The programme combines lectures and seminars with excursions to key sites in Rome and Florence.
The course will take place at KNIR from 19 to 22 October 2026, followed by the Netherlands Interuniversity Institute for Art History in Florence (NIKI Florence) from 22 to 29 October 2026.

In this course students will work on the publication of the architecture, human deposition(s) and inventories of tombs from the large Monte Del Bufalo cemetery excavated at Crustumerium, an Iron Age to Archaic Latin settlement located on the Tiber at a short distance northwest of Rome. Students will become familiar with tomb typology, ways of deposition of the human body, disposition of artefacts in the grave and artefact typologies. To learn the steps it takes from Excavation to Publication, students will learn to work according to a set protocol supervised by specialists. The practical work in the laboratory will be alternated with lectures and site and museum visits.

All BA and (R)MA students are encouraged to apply. We believe diversity enriches debate: different perspectives contribute to the quality of our work. We therefore value and highly encourage applications from students with diverse backgrounds and identities.

You can apply or nominate someone else for a residency in the autumn of 2027 at KNIR. The Artist in Residence programme is a collaboration between the Society of Arts (Akademie van Kunsten) and KNIR. The programme offers one place for the academic year 2027-28. The application period opens Monday 1 September 2026, and closes Monday 16 November, 12.00 CET. The residency in Rome is awarded to an artist who works for three months on a project that contributes concretely to the cross-fertilisation between art and academics.

In this archaeological field school, you explore the archaeology of mountain society with an international team while doing pedestrian survey and geophysical prospection in the hills and mountains of the Central Apennines. Although the focus of the project is on research, not on teaching, the high staff-student ratio provides ample room for learning in practice. It consists of intensive field and lab work: mainly pedestrian field survey, as well as the study of the finds and GIS documentation in the lab, and geophysical prospection.
BA, (R)MA and PhD students in Archaeology, Ancient History, Classics, Geoarchaeology and related fields enrolled at one of the KNIR partner universities in the Netherlands are encouraged to apply.
