We are very pleased to share our newest publication from the research group in Environmental Research Letters (IF 5.4).

Titled “Emerging climate constraints for olive cultivation in Europe under CMIP6 projections,” this article uses a number of indicators to map the climate exposure of European olive-growing areas under an SSP5-8.5 stress-test scenario.

The results indicate that olive producers could face multiple, and sometimes opposing, changes in climatic conditions. Reduced winter chilling, fewer frost days, more extreme summer heat and dryness, and changing climatic suitability for pests such as the olive fruit fly could all become increasingly relevant for olive-growing regions in Europe.

💧 Hydrology Days 2026 | Florence

Three researchers from our group took part in Hydrology Days 2026, sharing work on hydrological and climate-related challenges across Alpine, Mediterranean, and coastal environments.

🏔️ Mulun Na explored “Terrain-mediated livestock accessibility controls degradation processes in alpine grasslands.” Her research shows that degradation in Alpine pastures is not always linked to the steepest slopes, but can be concentrated in more accessible areas where livestock movement and trampling are greatest.

🌡️ Yujia Yang examined “Heatwave statistics under changing baselines: threshold sensitivity across Mediterranean climate regimes.” Her work investigates how the choice of climatological baseline can influence the way heatwaves are detected and compared across different Mediterranean regions.

🌊 Aurora Ghirardelli highlighted “Integrating Deep Learning and Multi-Decadal Remote Sensing for Monitoring Saltwater Intrusion Impacts in the Po River Delta.” Developed within the PNRR Agritech project, this research uses remote sensing and deep learning to monitor the impacts of saltwater intrusion on agricultural systems in the Po River Delta.

A valuable occasion to share ideas, discuss ongoing research, and connect hydrological science with real-world land and water management challenges.

Last week, TIIAME National Research University was welcomed to the city of Padova.

Our PI was involved in the welcoming of the delegation from TIIAME. Discussions took place about future collaborations and shared challenges, especially challenges surrounding drought and water scarcity. In addition, the delegation was able to visit a local water authority.

These kinds of meetings are one of many as the University of Padova looks to increase its global reach and build international connections.

How can we better capture and store water in vineyards under increasing climate uncertainty?

our research group is working on AQUA project to advancing innovative approaches for sustainable water management in the Prosecco wine region of northeastern Italy, where water availability is becoming an increasingly critical challenge.

Prosecco Hills and surrounding vineyards (Veneto, Italy) During spring 2026, we identified four representative vineyard sites spanning different geomorphological settings, from steep hillslopes to lowland areas. We conducted high-resolution drone surveys to capture the landscape in unprecedented detail.

The high-resolution datasets allow us to characterize slopes, flow pathways, and potential runoff accumulation zones with remarkable precision.

The ultimate goal is to support the design of nature-based micro-reservoirs and improve rainwater harvesting strategies, enhancing vineyard resilience to drought and increasing water-use sustainability in one of the world's most iconic wine-producing landscapes.

📍 In these days, Prof. Paolo Tarolli, Head of our research group, and Dr. Wendi Wang, member of our research team, visited the University of Science and Technology of China 中国科学技术大学 — USTC in Hefei, one of the leading universities in China and Asia in the fields of science, technology, and innovation.

The visit was an important opportunity to meet with the Dean, Deputy Dean, and colleagues from the School of Earth and Space Sciences, and to discuss possible future collaborations with the University of Padova.

🌍 The meetings focused on several shared research interests, including environmental sciences, Earth observation, digital agriculture, artificial intelligence, hydrology, and climate resilience.

As part of the visit, Prof. Paolo Tarolli also delivered an invited seminar titled:

“From centimetres to the cloud: building the Digital Twin of the Agricultural Landscape.”

The seminar explored how new technologies can help us better understand agricultural landscapes in a changing climate. High-resolution topography, hydrology, Earth observation, and artificial intelligence can be combined to build Digital Twins capable of supporting more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

Understanding landscapes at the centimetre scale can help anticipate floods, droughts, soil degradation, and water scarcity, turning data into useful knowledge for climate adaptation and sustainable food production.

🤝 The visit also opened new opportunities for future initiatives, including joint summer schools, thematic workshops, PhD student exchanges, and collaborative research projects between the two institutions.

🙏 Many thanks to USTC for the warm welcome, the inspiring discussions, and the valuable opportunity to strengthen scientific dialogue and international cooperation.

🌏 The Earth Surface Processes & Society research team participated in the JpGU–AGU Joint Meeting 2026 in Makuhari, Chiba, Japan.

Together with international colleagues, Wendi Wang and Eugenio Straffelini co-organized the session “Soil and Water Monitoring through Innovative Sensing Technologies under Climate Change”, dedicated to innovative approaches for monitoring soil–water dynamics in a changing climate.

During the session, our team presented research on remote sensing, multi-platform topography, and sustainable water management. Wendi Wang also shared results from the PNRR-funded A.Q.U.A. project (Approcci per la Quantificazione e l’Uso sostenibile dell’Acqua nel Sistema Prosecco), supported by Regione Veneto. The project focuses on addressing water scarcity and extreme rainfall through sustainable irrigation practices, efficient water storage solutions, and climate adaptation strategies for viticulture in the Prosecco area.

A valuable opportunity to strengthen international collaborations and exchange knowledge on how sensing technologies can support resilient soil and water management.

We are very pleased to present a perspective article titled "Nature-based solutions for soil and water conservation in an era of climate extremes: Limitations and future scenarios", published in International Soil and Water Conservation Research (IF 7.3).

Together with co-authors from around the world, the article discusses the efficacy of nature-based solutions in the context of future climate extremes.

Prof. Paolo Tarolli, head of our research group, participated in the EU CAP Network Conference “Water Resilience in Agriculture: Innovation in Practice” in Hamburg, Germany🇩🇪

During the event, he presented the “Soilution System”project, focused on innovative solutions for soil erosion risk mitigation and sustainable vineyard management in hilly and mountain landscapes 🍇🏔️.

📚🏢🧑🏻‍🌾🇪🇺The conference brought together researchers, institutions, farmers, companies, and stakeholders from across Europe to discuss sustainable water management, climate resilience, and innovation in agriculture.

The event also provided valuable opportunities for networking, exchanging ideas, participating in working groups, and exploring future collaborations🤝.

New Publication!

We present a new publication in the journal Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment (IF 4.5). Titled "A remote sensing framework for mapping agricultural water priority areas and hot spots in northeast Italy", this work aims to help improve agricultural water resource management in Italian water authorities.

We give many thanks to our partners at the Consorzio di Bonifica Adige Po for their cooperation.
