Maria Sofia (14) is too young to join our HEMA class. But when instructor Diana Michelis saw her eyeing the sabre class from a corner with the sad expression of a kid without a present under the Christmas tree, she petitioned the Maestro to admit the young lady to a special class.
Superfluous to say, she was yesterday's best fencer. Beware of Maria Sofia holding a sabre in a few years!

A beautiful sabre exercise brought us yesterday night by instructor Diana Michelis. To train the bandolier/traversone, stick a simple post-it to your clubmate's jacket, and dare to whip it away with one feather-like hand movement.
Progressions include doing it standing still, with step lunge and in movement.
Doing it with 35 degrees in the shade just adds to the fun!

The Caterpillar is a funny and totally-not-painful warm-up game. The fencers split in teams of 2 or 3 and at the GO sit in squat with a cone on their head. The teammates will sprint next to the them, squat, and receive the cone, to be passed to the next mate coming squatting on their left/right. Rinse and repeat until one team reaches the finish line.

It was the first time that Ilaria tried the zwerchhau, so she wasn't feeling very confident with this 20sec challenge. But when the instructor Diana called the "Allez", she went full "helicopter of death" on poor Jean Paul. Diana's face is priceless.

In the "Wheel of Death" warm-up/torture game the fencers must pass to each other a ball, cone or similar item while in plank, minding the frequent changes of direction.
When the first ABS started faltering Diana resorted to shaming: "IF YOU THINK YOU CAN'T KEEP IT, JUST REMEMBER I GOT A C-SECTION!!"

We call Iacopo "Nureyev" for his innate elegance -of course!- but also for his bad habit of lifting the left foot when lunging. This is how the instructor Diana went to correct it.
