Lab Chimenti - Heart-RePair lab Our research is focused on mechanisms of myocardial remodeling Patho-biology. We work closely together with the IBBC institute of CNR.

We gather grad and undergrad students in Biotechnology and Life Sciences from Sapienza University. Our research activity is focused on cardiovascular repair mechanisms and the cardiac stroma. In particular we study resident cardiac stromal cells in humans and rodents, and how the microenvironment and/or pathologic conditions can affect their phenotype. Our projects are aimed at cardiac regenerative medicine and tissue engineering approaches, as well as understanding paracrine and cytoprotective mechanisms in cardiac repair. We also study how Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal-Transition, dysmetabolic conditions, cardiovascular risk factors, and the microenvironment can affect stromal cells phenotype, in order to dissect their role in cardiac pathophysiology. Current lab members:
Isotta Chimenti - PI
Francesca Pagano - coPI (IBBC-CNR)
Vittorio Picchio - coPI assistant professor, tenure-track
Erica Floris - postdoc
Claudia Cozzolino - PhD student
Francesca Icolaro - PhD student

Molecules can exist in mirror images of themselves—left- and right-handed versions. Yet the stuff of life, from the amino acids in our proteins to the sugars in DNA, has evolved a preference for one-handedness, or chirality.

Why this asymmetry arose has long been a mystery, because ordinary chemical reactions tend to produce equal amounts of the two mirror images.

This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry honors Henri Kagan of the Université Paris-Sud and Kenso Soai of Tokyo University of Science for discovering how chemistry can break that symmetry—and for providing clues to how life’s one-handed chemistry might have emerged.

The heart’s constant beating may actively suppress tumor growth in cardiac tissues, a recent Science study reports. This is because cellular pathways in these tissues alter gene regulation in cancer cells to keep them from proliferating.

The findings shed light on the role of mechanical forces in protecting the heart from cancer and may pave the way to new cancer therapies based on mechanical stimulation.
