Six months ago, on January 13, our founder and director Suzanne Branciforte passed away. We would like to remember her as she looks in this photo - smiling and happy. We also like to share some messages we received in these past months, testifying her impact on many people's lives.
Suzanne era una persona meravigliosa. Anche se ci siamo incontrate solo una volta, aveva una personalità contagiosa. Ci siamo sentite come se la conoscessimo da sempre.
Suzanne had a profound and positive impact in my life, and her memory will continue to inspire me.
Suzanne était une femme que nous admirions pour son amour de la vie qu’elle partageait avec les autres. C’est un honneur d’avoir partagé une partie du voyage sur terre avec elle.
I can hear Suzanne’s voice and vibrant laugh in my head as if it were just yesterday when I studied in Genoa.
The month I spent learning from Suzanne in Genoa in 2019 forever changed my outlook on life.
I feel like I have lost one of my best friends.
Suzanne was an inspiration to those of us who were lucky enough to study under her. I admired her passion for life, good food, good wine, and friends.
She always brought so much joy and excitement to everyone’s time in Genoa, and I miss hearing her stories while exploring with her.
Una grande Donna, simbolo dello CHARME E DELL’ELEGANZA.

“Living is your greatest work of art” (Suzanne Branciforte, 1961 – 2024)
One month ago, on January 13, our beloved founder and director Suzanne Branciforte passed away in Genova, Italy, after a brief illness.
NY-born, Suzanne held a BA from Harvard and an MA and PhD from UCLA. She was the author of the best-selling multimedia program Parliamo italiano! (VHL, 5th edition,) that introduced generations of students to Italian language and culture.
Suzanne taught Italian to foreigners for more than 25 years. In the U.S., she taught at the College of the Holy Cross and UCLA; in Italy, she taught at the Università per Stranieri di Siena, the University of Genoa and Milan’s Università Cattolica. As a Master teacher, she trained teachers of Italian as a Foreign/Second Language until a few months ago.
Suzanne founded Study in Italy in 2000, with the motto Ridendo, s'impara!, or Learn while you’re laughing! With Study in Italy she became not only an educator but moreover a mentor - and often a close friend - for many students.
Uniquely talented, Suzanne was also a writer and translator, and interpreted for Nobel Prize winning economists and authors, as well as for politicians during the G8 2001 meeting. A certified Sommelier (Italian Association of Sommeliers – AIS,) Suzanne held a WSET Level 3 Award in Wines with Distinction. She founded the blog Italian Grapevine (italiangrapevine.com,) the service provider Grapevine Experience, and the YouTube vlog Living like an Italian so that more people could discover and enjoy the inimitable Dolce Vita Italian lifestyle.
We all admired her joie de vivre, her insatiable thirst for knowledge and the brightness of her aura. Suzanne loved life in every single way and truly lived it to the fullest and for us this is one of her most important teachings.

Only a few places are left in our exclusive program: 2 fabulous weeks of Italian culture (and some language!) in the stunning region of Puglia.
Our signature morning course (9:30 – 12:30, southern Italian style!) focuses on dolce vita lifestyle, followed in the afternoon by a series of exciting excursions and learning experiences, all included.
We want to pamper our adult students by including transfer to/from airport, excursions and lodging. You will be picked up at the easily accessible Bari Airport and shuttled to our seaside hotel in Taranto, the City of Two Seas, home base for this program.
As is our custom, a welcome dinner and final farewell dinner are part of the package. Because we want you to get to know the Salento region of Puglia, we have included a full day trip to Lecce. Our private coach will also take us to Altamura to see how the delicious bread from Puglia is made an cave churches of the early Christians. A visit to the Val d’Itria will let us admire the mysterious trulli houses, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And what visit to this area is complete without a stop in Grottaglie, where craftsmen still practice the art of ceramic in an age-old Pugliese tradition.
Our insider’s view of the region includes a visit to a gorgeous masseria where you will be welcomed by the winemaking family that lives there (and of course, the visit includes a wine tasting!) Learn to prepare local specialties in our private cooking lesson. There is still plenty of time for shopping, wandering around Taranto, or taking a swim in the crystal waters of the Ionian Sea (weather permitting!)

The Study In Italy team of Suzanne and Francesca did a very Genovese thing today: we walked to Madonna della Guardia! Our 9.3 km hike is a tradition here in Liguria. The spectacular sunshine offered stunning views of all of Liguria, sea and mountains, and the city's symbol, La Lanterna. Our reward: delicious typical dishes in a trattoria at the top of the mountain!
When will your travels take you to Madonna della Guardia, one of the most famous shrines in all of Italy?
