🌍 We are excited to launch the official page of the ERC Synergy Last Neanderthals project, an international scientific journey exploring one of the most compelling chapters of human evolution: the long coexistence between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, and the events that led to their disappearance around 40,000 years ago.

🔎 For more than 300,000 years, our species shared the planet with Neanderthals and other human groups: interacting, exchanging knowledge, and even hybridizing. Yet today, Homo sapiens stands alone. Why?
What climatic, ecological, and cultural dynamics shaped the final millennia of Neanderthal history?
These are the core questions driving our research.

🗺️ On our website, you can explore an interactive map showcasing the locations of our field activities: archaeological excavations, sampling campaigns, surveys, and coring operations across key regions of Eurasia.
This broad geographic scope is essential for expanding research beyond Western and Central Europe, where most known Neanderthal sites have traditionally been concentrated.

🍃Il primo personaggio della “Natural History League” é Aristotele, il primo scienziato della natura

🐞Aristotele (384–322 a.C.) non fu solo filosofo, ma anche osservatore sistematico della vita. Studiò oltre 500 specie animali, dissezionando pesci, molluschi e mammiferi, e classificandoli secondo caratteristiche anatomiche come la presenza o assenza di sangue.

👁️Applicava un metodo rigoroso: osservare, descrivere, confrontare, gettando le basi della biologia comparata. Anche quando formulava ipotesi errate, come la generazione spontanea, mostrava un approccio scientifico basato sull’evidenza e la logica.

🌱 Il suo lavoro anticipa concetti fondamentali della scienza moderna, dall’anatomia alla classificazione delle specie, dimostrando che la curiosità e l’osservazione diretta sono i pilastri della ricerca.
