The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz understands itself as a laboratory of basic research in art history in dialogue with other disciplines.

Founded in 1897, it has been an institute of the Max Planck Society since 2002. The KHI’s research is dedicated to the histories of art and architecture in a transcultural and global perspective, with a focus on Italy, Europe and the Mediterranean. A prime concern of projects and collaborations is to combine historical research with a critical engagement in current debates and challenges, such as

Marking Completion: The Status and Circulation of Drawings from the 15th Century to Today

International Workshop organized by the Lise Meitner Group "Coded Objects" at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max Planck Institute and The Medici Archive Project, Florence, September 22-23, 2026.

This two-day workshop will be hosted across three venues: on the first day at the Medici Archive Project (Palazzo Alberti), and on the second day at the Kunsthistorisches Institut (Palazzo Grifoni Budini Gattai) with a visit to the Museo Galileo, organized in collaboration with the museum.

Organizers: Karina Pawlow (Saarland University / KHI) and Rebecca I. Arnheim (Tel Aviv University).
