Alchimia contemporary Jewellery school in Firenze

Alchimia contemporary Jewellery school in Firenze Alchimia is one of the most prestigious jewellery school in Europe, offering Two-Year Bachelors and Master programs, annual, short and intensive courses

History
Alchimia, a school of contemporary jewellery and design in Florence, Italy, was founded in 1998 by Lucia Massei and Doris Maninger. Based in Oltrarno, Florence's historic artisan district, the school's philosophy is to provide students an innovative lab of creative thought, rooted in a deep understanding of tradition. This setting is important for a school that has among its goals to conne

ct learning and knowledge about traditional goldsmiths’ techniques with research and experimenting on both materials and the conceptual substrate of the creative process. Florence, one of the main symbols of the “Made in Italy” approach, has in fact always been a synonym of top artistic and artisan quality, conjugating the highest aspects of artistic concepts with the finest ex*****on capabilities. The choice of running a school of small dimensions (not more than twelve students per course) is a guarantee for rapid decisions and swift updates, maximum didactic quality and minimal bureaucracy, aspects in themselves that give further strength to the school and that differentiate it vis-à-vis the other schools in Italy, whether public or private. Alchimia has established itself as a major point of reference for contemporary jewellery-making both in Italy and in Europe. The school attracts students from all over the world, who follow full academic courses or intensive modules. A great number of international jewellery artists, art historians, gallery owners and collectors have run courses and seminars over these years. The importance of generating the right atmosphere between teachers and students has produced results of a very high quality, with peaks of excellence made evident by many international prized acknowledgements.

The first week has its own kind of energy.

New encounters, familiar spaces, ideas starting to circulate and plenty already happening across the school.

A glimpse into these first days back at Alchimia.

A language takes time.

July marked the end of a cycle. September marks the beginning of a new one.

Between repetition, change and return, an individual way of seeing gradually becomes recognisable.

Precision is more than a technical result.
For us, it begins with attention, repetition and the relationship between eye, hand and tool.

Our Microscope Stone Setting & Engraving program is the first in Florence dedicated to these techniques. It takes place in a purpose-built student laboratory equipped with professional GRS systems and GraverMax Air Tools.

Open to both beginners and advanced setters, the program combines guided exercises with focused bench work, developing control, accuracy and a more deliberate approach to every gesture.

The program can last from two weeks to three months, with new sessions beginning every Monday from September to July.

Not every part of the creative process is visible.

Some of the most important moments happen before the making begins, through observation, reflection and the time to let ideas evolve.

Contemporary jewellery begins long before it becomes an object.

A stone can hold the beginning of a story.

For Margarita, each stone becomes a starting point. Natural forms, unique characteristics and material qualities guide a process where jewellery emerges through observation, craftsmanship and intuition.

Margarita Armstrong Jones , who attended an intensive course at Alchimia, is among the selected designers presenting their collections at Dover Street Market London’s Jewellery Market Summer Exhibition 2026, where emerging voices in contemporary jewellery come together from around the world.

Some collections begin with an idea, others with a moment.

For Bianca, The After Party unfolds in the hours between night and day, where fragments, imperfections and imagined narratives become jewellery.
