Scuola del Cuoio is a leather workshop located in the heart of Florence, Italy. It was founded after WWII, and has since then produced leather goods with artisanal expertise and care. The artisans work inside the monastery of Santa Croce crafting handbags individually and specialize in made to order production. The Scuola has remained a quiet workshop that is still thriving today through loyal cus

tomers and exceptional quality in leather craftsmanship. Francesca's Jewel-Bags
In the tradition of our founder and her father Marcello, Francesca Gori has created a "Permanent Collection" of jewel-bags, bringing the real meaning of exclusitivity and uniqueness to their extreme: bags that are cut, assembled and stitched by hand, individually decorated with one-of-a-kind jewels and beads, catalogued and numbered one by one. Those who decide to purchase one of these unique pieces do not just become owners of a beautiiful bag, they become part of a centuries old authentic craftsmanship.

In leathercraft, the final wax polish is so much more than just a finishing touch ✨

It doesn’t simply make the leather shine, it helps protect, preserve and stabilize the surface, bringing out the depth and character of the craftsmanship.

This is why wax should never be seen as just a “glossy finish.”

In cuoietto, polishing is an essential part of the making process as it completes everything that came before: water, shaping, carving, embossing, punching and finishing.

Have you ever thought about playing with textures?

In our workshop, the art of leather weaving has been part of our craft since the 1960s.

But what if we gave this timeless technique a contemporary twist?

Today, we’ve started working on this medium Barbarina bag, bringing together two textures: denim fabric and white lambskin.

A little contrast, a lot of character.

What do you think? ✨

Mao is one of the quietest presences at Scuola del Cuoio...at least seemingly.

He left Japan in the early 2000s with a backpack and a desire to explore Europe.
His journey first brought him to Spain, where he began working in a saddlery and discovered, for the first time, the satisfaction of working with his hands.

In 2003, his adventurous spirit led him to Florence.

There, a hotel owner, speaking of the city's extraordinary artisanal heritage, encouraged him to knock on Scuola del Cuoio's door.

He met Tommaso Melani at a pivotal moment in the school's history: the master craftsmen, who had devoted their lives to the trade, were growing older, and a new generation was needed to carry their knowledge forward.

Mao joined the team with humility, learning quietly alongside those who had spent a lifetime perfecting their craft.

Over the years, his gentle nature, unwavering passion, and meticulous attention to detail have made him a trusted guardian of Scuola del Cuoio's tradition.
