Information on the funeral services for Father Via.
Gonzaga in Florence mourns the passing of a legend, Padre Via. Here are the words inscribed to him on permanent display at Gonzaga in Florence:
"Father Anthony P. Via, S.J.
The remarkably dedicated service of Father Anthony P. Via to the Gonzaga in Florence program from 1980 to 2004, during which time he served in both Director and Acting Director roles. Under Father Via's leadership, academic course offerings were expanded, student enrollment increased, and due to his erudition and reverence for learning, an outstanding faculty was hired and sustained.
He expertly navigated the complexities of administering a university program in a foreign country. His insight was essential in the acquisition of a permanent home for the Gonzaga in Florence program in Via Giorgio La Pira. Father Via's greatest impact, however, is the value he placed in relationships. True to the Jesuit spirit of availability, his office door was always open to faculty and students, and he offered the sacrifice
of the mass daily. He thoroughly understood the responsibility placed upon him and the program by the families of the students.
It is thus with the warmest gratitude that Gonzaga University recognizes Father Via's extraordinary achievements. Accordingly, the office of the Dean is also dedicated to Father Anthony P. Via, S.J."
