The Georgetown Club of Italy extends a special thank you to our friends at the Medici Archive Project in Florence. Our club board members and friends were treated to a behind the scenes peek at rare documents held in the Santa Maria Novella Archive. Grazie mille for an extraordinary feast that delighted to eyes and enriched the soul.

Before Meucci and Graham Bell there was the illustrious Florentine inventor Innocenzo Manzetti. Credited with the invention of a predecessor of the telephone and the télégraph parlant
in addition to a steam-powered car, a hydraulic water pump and a dazzling automaton playing the flute! Sadly, the prohibitive costs precluded him from obtaining the necessary patents, and hence the burden is on us to give him his proper placement amongst the great innovators in history. Today we celebrate the birth and life of the Florentine inventor and urge you visit Aosta to experience his automotan and other creations in a permanent exhibit in the Centro Saint Béninin.

About 40 kilometres from Rome lies a peaceful little village called Mandela. Today, on the birthday of Nelson Mandela, we urge you devote some time to community service and thoughtful leadership. If you find yourself in Lazio, we suggest you visit Mandela, breathe in the country air, reflect and determine how you can be Servant Leader like Nelson Mandela.
