Forty years’ experience in focusing exclusively on doctoral programmes, post-doctoral study and research has made the EUI a global leader in high-quality postgraduate education. We provide a culturally diverse academic community, where you study alongside more than 900 scholars from over 60 countries. The EUI offers well-structured doctoral programmes that enable original research in Economics, History and Civilization, Law, and Political and Social Sciences, plus a masters degree (LL.M) in Law. programmes are fully-funded, with approximately 150 scholarships provided annually by EUI Member States and Associated Member States. is about more than writing a dissertation. Our research activities and academic skills training includes seminars and conferences within all EUI departments, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies. In addition, our academic community has grown to include world-leading experts, visiting to present and discuss their work, and post-doctoral scholars, who further strengthen our interdisciplinary environment. Researchers benefit through this interaction, learning from and collaborating with these many distinguished visitors. Our dynamic multi-lingual environment means our researchers work predominantly in English, while enjoying our view on the beautiful city of Florence, an unparalleled cultural and artistic centre. “For me, it was a life-changing experience.”

For Jaroslaw Gwizdak, a Policy Leader Fellow at the STG in 2022, his time at the EUI had an impact that went well beyond the fellowship.

Looking back, he recalls how the ideas he explored during the programme found their way into his work in Poland and even inspired his radio show about law and rock and roll.

His advice to future fellows? To stay curious, get involved, think creatively and make the most of the people and ideas they encounter along the way.

🌳 An economist, a political scientist, a historian, and a legal scholar walk into a forest. Do they see the same thing?

For Max Weber Fellow Yasemin Akçagüner, each of them sees something different, and all of them are right.

OPEN concludes its first public chapter at Palazzo Buontalenti! ✨

Launched in May during the EUI's 50th anniversary celebrations, the exhibition's public opening officially came to a close on Monday, 12 October.

Over the past six months, OPEN welcomed nearly 7,000 visitors from more than 90 countries, affirming Palazzo Buontalenti as an open, dynamic bridge connecting the EUI with Florence and the wider territory.

Conceived as an evolving work-in-progress laboratory rather than a predefined, static project, the exhibition invited visitors on a journey through contemporary art, research, and the often-invisible sides of reality.

The close of OPEN's public opening was marked by two special guided visits. On 12 October, nearly 90 students from the University of Florence (DIDA School of Design) explored the exhibition, experiencing an opportunity for learning and exchange beyond the classroom.

Yesterday, around 40 young leaders from the Better Society Academy, an immersive masterclass powered by The Social Hub and the TSH Talent Foundation, visited OPEN with curator Stefania Rispoli from Museo Novecento Firenze.

While OPEN's public opening has come to an end, Palazzo Buontalenti continues to be a vibrant hub where researchers, master's students and local communities meet. Supported by Fondazione CR Firenze, the School of Transnational Governance's 'Officine d'Orizzonti' initiative will continue through December, hosting high school students from across the region for interactive workshops on European democracy, fundamental rights and contemporary transitions, using the exhibition's artworks and spaces for dialogue and exchange.

The EUI Spain Alumni Chapter is officially launched!

On 21 September, the EUI brought together alumni, researchers and partners in Madrid for the launch of its new Spain Chapter, generously hosted by the Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC).

The launch featured a timely discussion on "The Social Sciences and Their Promise: Knowledge, Democracy and Public Life", bringing together perspectives from the EUI, CSIC and the wider EUI alumni community.

💬 Closa, CSIC Vice President for Organization and Institutional Relations and EUI alumnus, warned that publication pressures increasingly reward: “data-led research, no questions”

The discussion explored how new data, research methods and the internationalisation of social science are transforming our understanding of complex societal challenges, while also considering the role of research and evidence in a context of political polarisation, institutional distrust and disinformation.

The event also celebrated the many ways in which EUI alumni contribute to academic research, public institutions and professional life in Spain and beyond.

Some recognition doesn’t come with a medal ✨

This year’s Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences went to Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford. When the Nobel Committee laid out the science behind their prize, one of the names it turned to was none other than Giancarlo Corsetti, Pierre Werner Chair at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSC) and Professor of Economics at the EUI.

Two of his papers on how economies shape each other’s fortunes are cited in the Committee’s scientific background 📈. Few researchers see their work woven into the story of a Nobel Prize - we’re proud to work side by side with one of them here in Florence. 👏

Are younger generations really faring worse than the ones before them? On , research from the EUI Department of Political and Social Sciences suggests the answer changes a great deal depending on which country you look at.

Comparing 24 countries for his PhD, Jos van Leeuwen found that where material conditions and political freedoms have been improving over time, younger generations report better mental health than the ones before them. Where that improvement has stalled, the trend runs the other way.

⏳What will Europe look like in 2076? And what will the future hold for universities?

These are some of the questions explored in a video organised by EUI researchers that opened the closing plenary of EUIdeas, our new flagship research event that was part of our 50th anniversary celebrations in May.

Looking fifty years ahead, members of the EUI community were invited to share their thoughts, ideas, and hopes for the future of universities, knowledge, and the Institute itself.

Those reflections, together with ideas shared during the plenary, are now sealed inside a time capsule, bound for 2076. Five decades from now, a new generation will open it and discover how we imagined their future.
