Erice International School of Science Communication & Journalism It is organised in collaboration with Nature Italy. Challenges that are brought forward by current developments in science, communication and the media.

The Erice School on Science Communication & Journalism is a summer school of INFN, held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture and aimed at young science journalists and communicators. As a student you will be introduced to today's challenges in science communication and science journalism by international experts. The program consists of lectures, interactive working sessions and di

scussions. Meeting with enthusiastic scientists, communicators and students will encourage you to develop new communication strategies and tools.

✨ Last day of fresh insights and connections at !

We spent the morning with Silvana Condemi (University of Aix-Marseille) who introduced us to the “Denisovan Enigma”, that of the Eastern brother of Neanderthal and Homo sapiens, and Jacopo Pasotti (environmental journalist and photographer) who told us about the challenges of reporting from the field. And now we are ready to go back to our work, with new tools, ideas and colleagues from all over the world.

🎙 Is it truly effective to emphasise being a woman in science? How can we use AI efficiently and creatively in science communication? How can science communication navigate rapidly changing digital environments? What role should science and science communication play in times of crisis?

The fellows reflected on and discussed these topics today in an enriching Media Lab session.

☄️ During the morning, they couldn't help but take a trip to , exploring stellar nucleosynthesis with Maria Luisa Aliotta (University of Edinburgh) and the early universe with Antonio Walter Riotto (University of Geneva), before looking at ESA - European Space Agency space missions through the storytelling of Emily Baldwin (North Star Content).

Stay tuned for the last day at the Erice school!

🎊 The XIII edition of our school kicked off today!

This morning 19 young science communicators, coming from 12 different countries and many different backgrounds, had the chance to find out more about the school and its hosting institute, INFN - Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, the three Ps of science journalism – polarisation, populism and post-truth – with Kai Kupferschmidt (Science) and particle physics methodologies, results and perspectives with Michelangelo Mangano (CERN).

💡 And after an engaging interactive session led by Fred Balvert (Erasmus MC University) on how to make a difference with science communication, they delved into galactic archaeology and galaxy formation with Emanuele Spitoni (INAF) and AI myths, ideology and political economy in relation to journalism with Carola Frediani (infosec technologist).

Many more interesting talks and discussions are still to come!

🚀 One day to go! The fellows are about to start their journey at the school, a journey through science, shared experiences and global .

🌍 Last year’s fellow Mariya Valyayeva summed it up perfectly: “During the lectures, I realised that all participants face the same challenges, no matter where they are from. For example, in the Netherlands, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, we fight against in vaccination. Erice school can help us meet each other, and share our efforts and experience”.

✨The school doors are opening in 2 days!

As we prepare to welcome fellows, we look back at what the school meant to one of last year’s participants, Lasse Winther:

“I'm an independent science content creator, and what I really don't have in my everyday is and community around what I do. So, that's actually the most amazing thing about coming to Erice, to this school: finding people who do the same thing I do”.

📯 -3 days to the start of the 13th edition of our school !

This year we will go back to the “ . How it all began”, with a rich programme of science lectures that will lead us to discover about galactic archaeology, particle physics, stellar nucleosynthesis, the history of the universe and that of the mysterious Eastern brother of Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens.

And then, with the journalism lectures, we will be catapulted back into the challenges of the present: the three Ps of science journalism – polarisation, populism and post-truth –, the myths, ideology and political economy of in relation to journalism, the power of a story in communicating space science, and the complexities of reporting from the field.

🎙 The Media Lab will also be back: a valuable opportunity for confrontation and debate.

Stay tuned to find out who the protagonists of this edition will be. We can't wait to meet up again in the wonderful Erice!

✨ The XII edition of our school kicked off today!
We are thrilled to welcome our new fellows coming from 12 different countries and many different backgrounds.
☀️ This morning we had the chance to find out more about the school, its hosting institute, INFN - Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, science communication in the times of global cooperation with Bein Deighton (SciDev.Net managing editor) and about underground physics with Ezio Previtali (director of Laboratori Nazionali Del Gran Sasso - INFN).
💡We then exchanged ideas and experiences on how to fight in a very engaging interactive session led by Fred Balvert.
Many more exciting talks and discussions are yet to come!
