Dolceacqua is the most important medieval town in the Val Nervia and the extreme west of Liguria. the town is made up of two beautiful villages: the original ancient centre, “Terra”, and the other from the nineteenth century, “Borgo”, connected by a spectacular medieval humpback stone bridge. The ancient part is towered over by Doria Castle, which is reached among picturesque alleys, taverns and typical artisan shops. Monet was enraptured by this town, to which he dedicated four works, defining the ancient bridge as a “jewel of lightness”.

What not to miss
The recently restored Doria Castle. The characteristic carrugi (narrow and shaded streets typical of the area), attractive scenery for Carrugi in Flower (April) and for the Festival of the michetta (August), a specialty sweet the recalls the abolition of the “jus primae noctis”. The Rossese di Dolceacqua, first Ligurian wine to receive the DOC seal of quality.

Why it received the “Orange flag”, seal of tourism and environmental quality
The many initiatives of the town are witness to a combination of progress and safeguard. Dolceacqua has not forgotten its own cultural identity; a successful union between history, nature and gastronomy is the secret of Dolceacqua, of its unforgettable charm and of its sincere hospitality. There are numerous events, among which we mention the “Festa della Michetta”, a typical sweet, held on 16 August. The town of Dolceacqua hosted the 2002 “1st Exhibition of Towns with the Seal of Tourism and Environmental Quality”.
