This spring, as part of the REM@KE team, Jacopo Uberti (PhD Student) contributed to the development and testing of a protocol for evaluating 3D scanning systems for the documentation of historical keyboard instruments.
“People often focus on the final 3D model, but a large part of the work happens long before any scan is made. Over the past months, together with the REM@KE team, we have compared different acquisition systems and refined a testing methodology to understand how reliably they reproduce geometric information. One of the most interesting aspects of this process has been realizing how much the outcome depends on the protocol itself. Before asking which scanner performs best, we first need to ask how their performance can be measured in a meaningful and repeatable way.”

The REM@KE Brand: Measuring the Past to Play the Future

The visual identity of REM@KE reflects the meeting point between rigorous scientific research and the historical heritage of keyboard instruments.

The icon evokes the profile of a harpsichord, centred on a white focal point recalling the sound hole—the instrument’s resonant heart. Irregular lines intersect it, symbolizing scans, measurements, and research paths that “cut through” history to understand and reconstruct it.

The typography contrasts classical serif fonts, linked to tradition, with modern sans-serif forms representing contemporary technology. Their interplay reflects an ongoing dialogue between past and present.

At the core, the @ symbol acts as a pivot toward knowledge, while the mirrored “E”s—echoing a keyboard—suggest a continuous back-and-forth movement: advancing through research while constantly returning to historical origins to inform it.

Flashback trip: ISA2026 Symposium.

Recently, two members of the REM@KE team attended ISA2026 — the International Symposium on Archaeometry in Turin. Dmytro Nykonenko and Giacomo Fiocco joined researchers from around the world to explore the latest advances in heritage science, materials analysis, and digital documentation.
While archaeometry may seem far from musical heritage, the methodological overlap was hard to miss: 3D documentation, digital twins, material analysis, non-invasive imaging — all relevant to our research into and reconstruction of historical instruments.
"Events like this are irreplaceable — meeting colleagues and friends from across the world in one place gives a real research impulse that's hard to find elsewhere. 🎹 The ERC REM@KE project is expanding! 🚀

Exciting news for international research in heritage science and music: the CNR ISPC (Institute of Heritage Science) and Politecnico di Milano (through its Musical Acoustics Laboratory DEIB in Cremona) have officially joined REM@KE as new beneficiaries!

These two world-class Italian research institutions strengthen the scientific backbone of the project, joining the founding consortium led by the University of Pavia, the University of York, and the University of Gothenburg.

🔍 What does this mean for the project?
By bringing advanced heritage diagnostics and cutting-edge vibroacoustic research into the mix, this expansion supercharges REM@KE’s interdisciplinary framework:

🏛️ CNR ISPC will deploy its famous MOLAB (Mobile Laboratory) to perform state-of-the-art, non-invasive diagnostic analyses (like X-rays and portable spectroscopy) directly inside museums. This will reveal the hidden materials and construction secrets of legendary historical keyboards.

📐 DEIB Politecnico di Milano will bring its expertise in engineering acoustics to measure and model the physical, dynamic response of keyboard actions. Using advanced techniques and technologies they will help to map how a performer’s touch translates into sound.
