Once again, it was a pleasure to conclude the lessons of COrtonaOPen3D with the final lecture by SEBASTIÁN arquitectos , architect, researcher and professor of Architectural Design at the University of Zaragoza.

Founder of Sebastián Arquitectos, he has developed a highly recognised and award-winning body of work spanning architecture, heritage conservation, landscape, museography and lighting design. His projects have received major national and international distinctions.

Through a journey across different scales, from territory and landscape to buildings, interiors and exhibition design, he reflected on how each scale transforms the way we understand and develop an architectural project.

The lecture presented inspiring works such as the restoration of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Sijena, the new Goya Museum in Zaragoza, and interventions along the Way of St James. These projects show how contemporary architecture can reactivate heritage, reveal its historical layers and create new cultural experiences while preserving the identity of each place.

Today we were delighted to welcome again Matteo Cavaglià, Adjunct Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, whose journey is closely connected to Cortona Open 3D itself. Matteo was a participant in the very first editions of the workshop, and it is a pleasure to welcome him back today as one of our lecturers.

During his engaging session, Matteo introduced participants to advanced Blender workflows for creating high-quality visualizations, demonstrating how cutting-edge digital techniques can enhance creativity and professional practice.

The lecture also explored the interaction between Blender and Artificial Intelligence, showing how AI-powered tools can support image creation, streamline creative workflows, and open new possibilities for the visualization and communication of cultural heritage.

Thank you, Matteo, for inspiring our students and sharing your expertise!

We had the pleasure of welcoming , Vice President of the Accademia Etrusca and a leading figure in the promotion and preservation of Cortona’s cultural heritage.

With his extensive experience in cultural management, museum collaboration, and heritage enhancement, Albano delivered a truly inspiring lecture on the cultural landscape of Cortona, the legacy of Gino Severini, and the unique relationship between art, architecture, and place.

The experience continued today with a guided tour of the MAEC – Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca e della Città di Cortona, where Albano accompanied some of our participants through the museum’s outstanding collections, offering unique insights into the history, archaeology, and artistic heritage of the city.

Thank you, Albano, for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion for Cortona with our students!

What if heritage became your design studio?

At the Cortona Open 3D Workshop, participants learn to move beyond documenting heritage and start designing directly on its digital twin. Working with Blender, accurate 3D models become dynamic spaces where ideas can be explored, tested, and refined before becoming reality.

Because the future of heritage is not only about preserving the past—it’s about shaping what’s next. ✨

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Victoria E. Trasobares, Director of Territorio Mudéjar

She shared valuable insights into how a rural heritage management organization operates, highlighting the challenges and opportunities of preserving cultural heritage in rural contexts.

Her lecture focused on the role of smart digitalisation strategies and how digital technologies can become powerful tools for heritage conservation. From improving documentation and research to supporting new restoration projects, enhancing decision-making, and making cultural heritage more accessible to wider audiences, digitalisation is opening new possibilities for the future of heritage.

A truly inspiring session showing how innovation and heritage can work hand in hand to protect and enhance our shared cultural legacy.

In the historic fabric of Cortona, where Etruscan traces, medieval structures and layered urban transformations coexist, the workshop returns to a question that is always open: how does heritage become a space for design thinking today?

This year we will work on the figure of Gino Severini, not as a closed museum object, but as a starting point to explore how artistic languages can re-enter the city and its architectural fabric.

Between art, architecture and heritage, we will test how interpretation can shift from preservation to activation — using digital tools and 3D environments as instruments for reading and transforming context.

A city like Cortona is not just a background, but a structure of time, scale and memory that continuously redefines the work produced within it.
