The exhibition “Graffiti dell’Umbria. Scritture spontanee medievali e moderne (8th–18th centuries)” curate ed by Pier Paolo Trevisi was inaugurated on 12 July 2026 at the Diocesan Museum and Crypt of San Rufino in Assisi.
The exhibition has been supported by the ERC Advanced Grant project Graff-IT: Writing on the Margins. Graffiti in Italy (7th–16th Centuries).

We are back from IMC Leeds 2026 inspired by incredible days of
academic exchange and scholarly dialogue!
The Graff-IT project sessions were a fantastic experience: large
audience, high engagement, and a lively discussion that proved once again the great potential of historical graffiti and our current
research.
A huge thank you to the chairs – Profs. Anna Adamska, Frances Andrews and Marco Mostert – who skillfully guided the sessions, ensuring the success of each panel.
Our thanks also go to the Medieval Congress -
University of Leeds team for organizing a conference that every year proves to be an excellent venue for medievalists, and to the entire community for such a warm response!

From 6 to 9 July 2026, the International Medieval Congress will take place at the University of Leeds, bringing together scholars from across the world to discuss current research in Medieval Studies.
The programme includes three sessions sponsored by the ERC Advanced Grant project Graff-IT: Writing on the Margins. Graffiti in Italy (7th–16th Centuries): Session 116, 216, 316, all of them dedicated to “Graffiti and the Shaping of Temporalities: From the Early Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period”.
The panels will feature contributions by several members and collaborators of the project, including Carlo Tedeschi, Simone Allegria, Chiara Rosso, Sebastiano Blancato, Antonello Vilella, Denise Brazzale, Antonella Undiemi alongside scholars from other European institutions. Together, the sessions will explore how graffiti can shed light on the perception, marking, and experience of time from the medieval to the early modern period.

On 25 June, Denise Brazzale will present at the University of St Andrews’ conference “Blessed are those who mourn: Grief from Antiquity to Present”. Her presentation will explore the stratifications of grief in the prison graffiti of Terra del Sole (XVI-XVII c.)”

Chiara Rosso (University of Chieti-Pescara, Graff-IT ERC Project) is participating in the XIV International Medieval Meeting Lleida (3-5 June), organised by the University of Lleida and the Grup de Recerca Consolidat en Estudis Medievals 'Espai, Poder i Cultura'. On 25 May, Chiara Rosso (University of Chieti-Pescara, Graff-IT ERC Project) presented the seminar "Traces on the Walls: Insights from Medieval and Early Modern Graffiti in Northwestern Italy" at Durham University, as part of the seminar series organised by Durham University's Medieval and Early Modern Students Association (MEMSA).

The third workshop, organized jointly by the FARE-SCRENIM and ERC Graff-IT projects and held in Viterbo from May 27 to 29, ended with a visit to sites of graffiti-related interest, namely the City Museum of Viterbo, the ancient prisons of Vetralla, and the Ave Maria Chapel in the countryside near Vetralla. Thanks to Paola Pogliani and Francesco Cardarelli (University of Tuscia), Elisabetta De Minicis (Museo della Città e del Territorio, Vetralla), Daniela Venanzi and Sandrino Aquilani (Municipality of Vetralla), and Luigi De Simone (Agriturismo “Il Marrugio”). Finally, special thanks to Rocco D'Errico, who produced a remarkable photographic series in the prisons and in the Ave Maria Chapel in Vetralla.
