📜 Giving Voice to the Condemned to Death: Graffiti at the Bargello in Florence

On 9 October 2026, Simone Allegria (University of Chieti-Pescara), member of the FARE SCRENIM research project, will deliver a lecture entitled “Marginal Communities and Their Graffiti: The Voices of Those Condemned to Death in the Podestà Chapel of the Bargello (15th–16th c.)”.

The lecture will explore the graffiti left by prisoners on the walls of the Bargello’s Podestà Chapel, examining how these inscriptions, read alongside judicial and confraternal records, offer a rare opportunity to approach capital punishment from the perspective of those who experienced it.

The lecture is part of “Welcome to Florence”. Workers, Foreigners, and Other Communities in the Renaissance and in the Present, a Studienkurs organised by the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut, in collaboration with the European University Institute (EUI).

The 2026 cycle of the Graff-IT Seminars, organized by Simone Allegria, Carlo Tedeschi, and Antonello Vilella, continues on October 6th with the presentation of the book by Antonello Vilella “Epigrafi dalla Puglia medievale. Il Duecento in Terra di Bari (Binetto, Bitonto, Giovinazzo, Molfetta, Palo del Colle e Terlizzi)” (CISAM, 2024). The presentation will take place in the Aula multimediale del Rettorato at the University of Chieti – Pescara. Antonio E. Felle and Paolo Fioretti of the University of Bari will discuss the book with the author. Carlo Tedeschi of the University of Chieti – Pescara will moderate the event.

ERC Graff-IT project in Chieti | 3 October 2026
On 3 October, as part of Il cammino del Tau. Francescanesimo a Chieti, the ERC Graff-IT project will present a preview screening of the documentary “Graffiti devozionali – Assisi”, produced by Terra Srl (Diego D’Innocenzo and Francesco Giannetti).
The documentary presents the research carried out by the ERC Graff-IT project team on the devotional graffiti of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, exploring the traces left on its walls by pilgrims and visitors over the centuries.
The screening will take place in the presence of Carlo Tedeschi, Principal Investigator of the ERC Graff-IT project, and Emanuela Criber, architect at the Soprintendenza ABAP Chieti-Pescara.

On 1 October 2026, from 3:30 to 6:30 PM, the event “Graffiti su Giotto. I graffiti della Ca****la degli Scrovegni di Padova” will take place at the Museo Eremitani – Sala del Romanino in Padua.
The event will feature contributions by Carlo Tedeschi and Antonella Undiemi alongside Donato Gallo, Federica Millozzi, Rita Deiana and Louise Bourdua. The session will be moderated by Nicoletta Giovè.

How can we study and preserve writings that were never intended to be preserved? And when does a graffito, from a trace left on a wall, become a historical source and part of our cultural heritage?

These questions are at the heart of the Fourth International Workshop of the ERC Graff-IT project, Stories of Signs. The Study and Conservation of the Graffiti of the Tezon Grando on the Island of Lazzaretto Nuovo (Venice), to be held in Venice on 18–19 September 2026.

The workshop will open on Friday, 18 September, in the Salone del Piovego at the Doge’s Palace, with a day devoted to the graffiti of the Lazzaretto Nuovo: their history, the study of the writings, issues of protection and conservation, and the opportunities – as well as the challenges – involved in making this heritage accessible to the public. The day will conclude with a round table bringing together scholars, conservators, and professionals working in heritage protection and public engagement.

On Saturday, 19 September, the workshop will continue on Lazzaretto Nuovo Island, with special guided tours dedicated to the graffiti of the island and the Tezon Grando, including the eastern section of the building, normally closed to the public as it houses the Italian Ministry of Culture’s Repository for Archaeological Heritage.

An opportunity to reflect on how traces left on walls over the centuries can be read, documented, preserved, and made accessible to the public without losing their connection with the places that have preserved them.

📢 Graff-IT at the conference “Di bocca in bocca: Francesco d’Assisi tra conservazione della memoria e tradizione orale”

On 17 September 2026, Simone Allegria and Pier Paolo Trevisi will take part in the conference Di bocca in bocca: Francesco d’Assisi tra conservazione della memoria e tradizione orale, hosted at the Monastery of Santa Rosa in Viterbo.

At 18:15, they will present and discuss the documentary:

“Writing on Walls in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. The Devotional Graffiti of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi”

directed by Diego D’Innocenzo and Francesco Giannetti, produced within the ERC Advanced Grant Graff-IT Project.

The documentary explores the extraordinary corpus of devotional graffiti preserved in the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, highlighting the value of these spontaneous writings as precious historical evidence of religious practices, individual memory, and the lived experience of pilgrims and visitors across the centuries.

The conference will bring together scholars from different disciplines to reflect on the relationship between written sources, oral tradition, and the transmission of Franciscan memory.

The exhibition “Graffiti dell’Umbria. Scritture spontanee medievali e moderne (8th–18th centuries)” curate ed by Pier Paolo Trevisi was inaugurated on 12 July 2026 at the Diocesan Museum and Crypt of San Rufino in Assisi.
The exhibition has been supported by the ERC Advanced Grant project Graff-IT: Writing on the Margins. Graffiti in Italy (7th–16th Centuries).

We are back from IMC Leeds 2026 inspired by incredible days of
academic exchange and scholarly dialogue!
The Graff-IT project sessions were a fantastic experience: large
audience, high engagement, and a lively discussion that proved once again the great potential of historical graffiti and our current
research.
A huge thank you to the chairs – Profs. Anna Adamska, Frances Andrews and Marco Mostert – who skillfully guided the sessions, ensuring the success of each panel.
Our thanks also go to the Medieval Congress -
University of Leeds team for organizing a conference that every year proves to be an excellent venue for medievalists, and to the entire community for such a warm response!

From 6 to 9 July 2026, the International Medieval Congress will take place at the University of Leeds, bringing together scholars from across the world to discuss current research in Medieval Studies.
The programme includes three sessions sponsored by the ERC Advanced Grant project Graff-IT: Writing on the Margins. Graffiti in Italy (7th–16th Centuries): Session 116, 216, 316, all of them dedicated to “Graffiti and the Shaping of Temporalities: From the Early Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period”.
The panels will feature contributions by several members and collaborators of the project, including Carlo Tedeschi, Simone Allegria, Chiara Rosso, Sebastiano Blancato, Antonello Vilella, Denise Brazzale, Antonella Undiemi alongside scholars from other European institutions. Together, the sessions will explore how graffiti can shed light on the perception, marking, and experience of time from the medieval to the early modern period.
