🌱 Digital technologies in organic fertilization – benefits for farmers
The module “Use of Digital Technologies in Crop Production” is particularly interesting for farmers because it combines traditional knowledge about organic fertilizers with the practical possibilities offered by precision agriculture.
It teaches farmers how to use manure, slurry and other organic fertilizers efficiently while reducing costs, nutrient losses and the negative environmental impact of agricultural production.
🌦️ Digital solutions are an especially interesting part of the module. Weather stations and soil probes help farmers identify the appropriate “weather window” for fertilizer application.
🚁 Drones, NDVI maps and EC soil scanners make it possible to detect differences within a field, while 🧪 NIR sensors can rapidly determine the nutrient content of slurry.
🚜 Variable Rate Application systems and automatic section control adjust the fertilizer rate to the requirements of individual field zones and prevent overlaps.
⚖️ Digital weighing systems and automatic floor-conveyor control also improve the accuracy of manure spreading.
🗺️ Data from completed operations can be recorded automatically in FMIS platforms and presented as As-Applied maps.

❓What is the #1 digital tool that European farmers use everyday?
1,444 farms across 9 EU countries give us a clear answer. (JRC Report, 2025)
Among both crop (58%) and livestock (66%) farms,
the most widely adopted tools are digital records.
A consistent #2 is farm management software (21-23% for all farmers)
Yet, most agriculture students will never use those tools in class.
Instead their first experience with them will be at work.
This is why in MO-LAB II we’re dedicating an entire training module on data management, where students learn to use what their daily work will require.

🐄 We asked farm operators which digital skills matter most in modern livestock farming.
Their answers pointed less at the tools themselves, and more at what those tools reveal:
✅ Early signs of heat or an approaching calving
✅ Changes in an animal's physiological status
✅ Shifts in behaviour, welfare or health, picked up by sensors and cameras
✅ Movement in production indicators, animal by animal
✅ Early warning signs that matter for disease prevention
The theme that kept returning in our research is that running the technology is only half the challenge. The other half is understanding what it's telling farmers about their livestock.
🌱 This is why the MO-LAB II training modules aim to help VET agricultural students with both using digital tools, and making sense of the data they produce.

🌱 Agricultural teachers are telling us the same simple thing: "I know the tools are changing. But I don't always know which changes are important."

🚜 This is not a single case. Across Europe, farms are going digital and day-to-day work is starting to run on everything from basic apps to specialised crop software. But vocational agriculture education is often still catching up, and teachers are left guessing which skills will actually matter to their students.

📘 MO-LAB II exists to answer that question with evidence.

🌾 We gathered input from practice, from the sector, and from schools themselves, and turned it into the MO-LAB II Competence Catalogue: a clear index of the digital competences agriculture VET schools across the EU should be developing.

🚁 What can a drone show us that we may not notice from the ground?

A farm field can appear healthy when checked in person, but bigger issues may remain hidden.

This is where drones, cameras and spectral imaging can help - they give farmers a clearer view of crop conditions across the whole field.

But the images are only part of the process.

Farmers also need to understand the data and how to use it when making decisions.

This is why the MO-LAB II training modules don’t just show how to use modern technologies, but also what to do with the data they give.

MO-LAB II was presented in Sofia during the seminar event “Mastering EU Projects: Strategies for Success”, dedicated to the participation of education providers in the Erasmus+ programme, held on 10 June 2026.

The event was organised by Think Loom, in cooperation with Uniser, and hosted by 18th Secondary School “William Gladstone”. It brought together 30 participants from the education sector, including agricultural VET school teachers and directors.

During the seminar, participants had the opportunity to learn more about the MO-LAB II project, its objectives and the educational approach the project consortium is following towards digitalisation and modernisation of agricultural education. A special focus was placed on the training content that is developed within the project modules and planned for testing with agriculture VET schools in the upcoming implementation period.

The event proved to be a valuable opportunity to present MO-LAB II, highlight how the project can support Bulgarian agricultural education, and strengthen the participation of schools in the Erasmus+ programme.

As a follow-up, participants will receive updates on the progress of MO-LAB II, together with information about opportunities to take part in the testing of the educational materials developed within the project.

ASSO hosts the MO-LAB II transnational meeting in Italy on 28–29 April, bringing project partners together to strengthen collaboration and advance key activities. The two-day meeting provides an important opportunity to review progress, exchange experiences, and coordinate the next stages of implementation.

During the sessions, partners discuss the development and refinement of project outputs, ensuring the alignment of results across all participating organisations. Particular attention is given to the integration of training modules into the MO-LAB digital platform, with a focus on usability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability.

The meeting also fosters closer cooperation between partners, encouraging knowledge sharing and the exchange of best practices. Through workshops, discussions, and strategic planning, the consortium works towards enhancing the overall impact of the project and ensuring that its outcomes effectively support innovation in education and training.

MO-LAB II was presented at Macfrut 2026 in Rimini (Italy), through dissemination activities carried out by partner ASSO – Agenzia per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile.

During the event, ASSO representatives engaged directly with stakeholders across the agri-food sector, including representatives from the Emilia-Romagna regional ecosystem, the CIA – Italian Farmers Confederation and groups of young farmers from different regions of Italy.

These exchanges provided valuable opportunities to introduce the project, share its objectives, and discuss the role of accessible training and digital skills in supporting the sector’s transition.

Alongside these interactions, the team followed the workshop on “Data, IoT and AI for agriculture”, where current developments in agri-tech were presented, ranging from real-time crop monitoring solutions to automated systems and data-driven decision tools.
A key takeaway from both discussions and field observations is that innovation is already available, but its adoption depends on skills, awareness and accessibility.

In this context, Molab2 contributes by providing free and accessible training content, designed to help learners and future professionals understand and apply these technologies in practice.

Participation in events like Macfrut is essential not only to disseminate the project, but also to listen, exchange and ensure that project results remain aligned with real needs on the ground.
