An is a Belgian mathematician at KU Leuven, teaching mathematics to science students and working to support a smoother transition from secondary to higher education (including through the Flemish positioning tests).

She is also active in outreach through the Flanders Math Olympiad and the IMAGINARY exhibition “Beauty and Power of Mathematics” (2022–2023). In her words:

“I want to try to show people the beauty and convince them of the power of mathematics in their daily life.” 📐✨

Tomorrow, 14 March, we celebrate the International Day of Mathematics, a worldwide celebration of mathematics marked each year on Pi Day. 🌍️

The day brings together people of all ages through events and activities in schools, museums, libraries, universities, and many other spaces. This year’s theme is “Mathematics and Hope,” and there are already hundreds of events around the world featured on the IDM website.

We are delighted to welcome Tiago Hirth as a new member of the EMS Mathematics Outreach and Engagement committee. 👋

Tiago is a mathematician and historian of science, a stage performer, and an educator who believes that playing is serious business and that mathematics is “the greatest game of them all”. His work explores the intersection of conjuring arts, board game studies, and recreational mathematics, inspired by the Gathering 4 Gardner community.

Based in Lisbon, Tiago is a researcher at CIUHCT (University of Lisbon), a founding member of Circo Matemático (Mathematical Circus), and part of the non-profit Associação Ludus, dedicated to enriching mathematical culture. Internationally, he serves on the board of Gathering 4 Gardner and supports the Recreational Mathematics Magazine.

TU Delft clearly didn’t want to wait until 14 March, Pi Day — they took a huge head start! 😄
