The difference between "AMONG" & "BETWEEN" is not just in the number of people or things involved but in their type of involvement.
It's not a mistake to use for 3 or more different objects.
" He is so ignorant that he doesn't recognize the difference between an inn, hotel, hostel and a farmhouse".
Inn, Hotel, Hostel and Farmhouse are 4 different types of accommodation for with their own uniqueness. Between is sometimes more specific.
Let's change the sentence :
"He is so ignorant that he doesn't recognize the difference among the different types of accommodations".
here refers to a group and it's a bit more vague because.
