EGO & the Virgo Collaboration

EGO & the Virgo Collaboration Virgo is a gravitational wave experiment, hosted by the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) EGO is established under the Italian law.

In order to ensure the long term scientific exploitation of the VIRGO interferometric antenna for gravitational waves detection as well as to foster European collaboration in this upcoming field, the VIRGO funding institututions (CNRS for France and INFN for Italy) have created a consortium called EGO (European Gravitational Observatory). VIRGO is a 3-km long interferometer built in the framework of a French-Italian collaboration. Today, this collaboration involves 19 laboratories with more than 250 scientists in France, Italy and also in the Netherlands, Poland and Hungary as well. Its governing body is the Council composed of members nominated by the funding institutions. The Council appoints a Director who is the legal representative and chief executive of EGO. The Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), advises the Council on scientific and technical activities carried out by the Consortium and the Virgo Collaboration. The STAC is composed of up to ten international scientific personalities.

👉 L'Open Day si dividerà in tre momenti: venerdì pomeriggio, venerdì sera e sabato pomeriggio.

👉 L'Open Day quest'anno si dividerà in tre momenti: venerdì pomeriggio, venerdì sera e sabato pomeriggio.

EGO’s technical deputy director, Franco Carbognani, accepted the Frontiers of Science Award in Physics on behalf of the Virgo Collaboration, during the International Congress of Basic Science in Beijing, China.

The award, for “achievements from the past ten years which are both excellent and of outstanding scholarly value”, was given to the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration for the paper announcing the first detection of a coalescence of neutron stars “GW170817: observation of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral”, published in 2017.

Exactly nine years ago LIGO and Virgo detected a signal that would change astronomy forever: their first ever neutron star merger, GW170817 💥

Why was this observation so revolutionary? 🧐 Neutron stars mergers have something that black hole mergers don’t: emission of electromagnetic radiation, aka light in all of its spectrum 🌈 Thanks to the localization of the source done by LIGO and Virgo and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope this event was not only observed through gravitational waves, but also seen on the electromagnetic spectrum by 70 observatories on Earth and in space. Multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves was born! ✨

In addition to its scientific relevance, this event was also an impressive example of global collaboration: the paper describing the observations is coauthored by almost 4,000 scientists from more than 900 institutions 🌍

People in various parts of the world are preparing to witness a solar eclipse of extraordinary magnitude, but did you know that a solar eclipse in 1919 made it possible to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity? ☀️ 🌚

💫According to this theory, published a few years earlier, the apparent position of the stars in the sky would be affected by the presence of the Sun along the line of sight, as the light from the stars would be deflected by the warping of space-time caused by the Sun. However, this was impossible to verify under normal conditions because, obviously, the Sun’s brightness prevents us from seeing the stars.

🚢🚢 British astrophysicist Arthur Stanley Eddington decided to make use of the impending eclipse of 1919 to overcome this problem. The Sun would still be present in the visible portion of the sky, but its brightness would be completely obscured by the Moon, making it possible to measure the positions of the stars around it. Eddington and his colleague Dyson set off on two expeditions to locations that were ideal for carrying out this measurement: the island of Príncipe, in West Africa, and the Brazilian city of Sobral.

The results were astonishing: the apparent position of the stars did indeed shift, and by an amount consistent with the predictions of general relativity 🤯 Einstein, who until then had been known primarily within the field of physics, would from that moment on become who he is now: one of the world’s most famous scientists.

Today, as you look up at the sky for the eclipse (with the proper eye protection!), think of Eddington and his revolutionary expedition 🌝
