Melofonetica

Melofonetica The science and art of sung Italian. Helping singers achieve clear & expressive Italian lyric diction since 2014.

Founded by Dr. Matteo Dalle Fratte, author of The Melofonetica Method 📖 Melofonetica was established in 2014 by tenor, musicologist and Italian Coach Dr. Matteo Dalle Fratte, to provide:

- Training and resources to help singers achieve clear, correct and expressive sung Italian in opera and classical music.
- Coaching and consultancy to help other music professionals develop skills, confidence an

d expertise in Italian repertoire. We believe that clarity of text is at the heart of great opera. Based on the phonetics of sung Italian, the Melofonetica Method™ is grounded in science. The method cuts through complexities to get to the core of what it takes to sing Italian well in a performance space. Clearly articulated, well projected text, with its innate musicality and expression, has always been fundamental to the great composers of Italian opera, from Monteverdi to Puccini. Our work with singers and other music professionals aims to promote a better understanding of the intrinsic properties of the sung Italian language and, ultimately, to help audiences fully experience its beauty and expressivity.

🎵 What makes the Melofonetica Method different for sung Italian?

In this reel we share 7 key aspects, including:

• A focus on consonant length (long vs short) as the backbone of sung Italian
• Vowels that are free to be shaped by resonance, dynamics and timbre
• Expressive tools that create an idiomatic and personalised interpretation
• An approach that supports healthy, resonant singing and redefines legato to complement, not compromise, diction

The method is informed by research, and tried and tested with singers and conservatoires worldwide.

To try this way of working for yourself, take a simple first step with our FREE 30‑MINUTE MINI COURSE:

‘Sung Italian Consonants – A Quick Start Guide’

On 16 August, the main square of Crespano del Grappa was filled with the sound of Italian opera as the talented participants of our Veneto Opera Summer School 2025 presented a public concert of Italian arias and ensembles. After a week of intensive study, they performed beautifully for a large and appreciative Italian audience.

We’re so proud of every singer and also grateful for the generosity of all who donated to the local parish church on the evening to support the work of the Catholic church in Gaza.

Here’s the finale, ‘La canzone del Grappa’, a local song composed by Antonio Meneghetti during the First World War and a popular and rousing anthem for the local area!

A huge grazie to the Amministrazione Comunale di Pieve del Grappa, the Parrocchia di Crespano and to our brilliant team:
🎹 Pianist: Julie Aherne
🎼 Conductor: Peter Ford

Bravissimi a tutti!
