ILETA has been set up by our founder Sofia Parastatidou to bring together Legal English Trainers from around the world.

We offer Hybrid Conferences, Workshops, Teacher Training, Monthly MeetUps and Webinars for teachers, translators and interpreters With the fusion of experience, knowledge, skill sets - new and improved ways of teaching Legal English can be found and developed. This is imperative as we enter into the AI era. We have already started to feel the effects articifial intelligence. Changes are inevitable

in the way will have on the way we plan lessons, teach, test and assess students not to mention how the translation and interpreting industry will be affected. ILETA is an education and training institute for the professional development of new teachers and other practitioners (interpreters and translators) to the field of Legal English. And there is a place for our more experienced Legal English teachers and practitioners - we will help you refine and improve your skills too ! Through the ILETA training courses we aim to:-

- provide the skills and training necessary to attain and enhance your confidence as a Legal English Teacher and practitioner
- provide qualification and recognised CPD for Legal English Teachers and practitioners
- Promote training and examination standards for national and international recognition of Legal English Skills and Language and skills for translating and interpreting
- Foster continuing professional development (CPDs)
- Provide access to teaching materials, professional and academic journals and training manuals to help teachers, trainers and students
- Provide and foster networking activities and opportunities

Since launching in July 2023, ILETA has united Legal English practitioners globally through Europe, Asia, the Middle East, America, South America and Australasia. Catering for teachers/trainers and other professionals from academia and from the commercial sector ILETA provides a bridge between practitioners with diverse backgrounds and experience. We have been instrumental in organising different events including:-

- Hybrid Workshops
- Hybrid Teacher Training Webinars
- Hybrid Winter Schools
- Online Monthly Trainer MeetUPs (TM)

Conferences, workshops, winter schools and webinars feature experts in the field of Legal English who present the latest developments on methodology, materials development and teachers' practices, assessments and the incorporation/impact of AI on their teaching practices. ILETA caters for different members' needs by offering various membership packages to suit your needs and budget. ILETA Membership benefits include:

This Month’s MeetUp and discussion, led by Mike Waters, (ILETA Country Ambassador-Romania) Legal Communication Consultant, who will examine the topic,

The Language of Legal English – Archaisms et al

The use of archaic language is one that has often left legal professionals in a dilemma.

Do we really need to say, “In the event that payment is not received within 14 days of the issuance of the invoice, pursuant to and in accordance with the terms and conditions herein, the Vendor hereby reserves the right to terminate the Agreement.” ?

Would, “If he doesn’t receive payment within 14 days, the seller may end the agreement,” not make more sense?

We will discuss this question on the 29th, and we will also

- Look at some common examples of ‘Legalese’
- Examine why such language has been used historically and is still used by many today
- Consider the problems caused by the use of ‘Legalese’ in the modern world,
- Remind ourselves of the dangers of over-simplification

All opinions, contributions and questions are not only welcome but positively encouraged, and I look forward to a lively discussion. If you’ve had any experiences with archaic English, we’d love to hear!

DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OF FUTURE LEGAL ENGLISH PROFESSIONALS
TEACHERS, TRANSLATORS AND INTERPRETERS

Legal English plays a crucial role in an increasingly globalized legal environment. As legal systems interact across jurisdictions, the demand for professionals who can effectively teach, translate, and interpret legal English continues to grow. Preparing the next generation of Legal English professionals requires innovative pedagogies, interdisciplinary training, and a deep understanding of both language and law.
This Call for Presentations invites educators, trainers, translators, interpreters, and legal practitioners to explore how the skills of future Legal English professionals can be developed, strengthened,and assessed.

o Contributions may address the preparation and professional development of Legal English teachers, legal translators, and legal interpreters working in academic, professional, or institutional contexts.

Suggested Topics
Submissions may include, but are not limited to:
● Pedagogical approaches to training Legal English teachers
● Competence frameworks for Legal English professionals
● Training legal translators and interpreters in common law and/or civil law terminology and concepts
● Practical skills for Legal English professionals in international legal practice
● The role of comparative law in Legal English education
● Technology and AI in Legal English teaching, translation, and interpreting
● Assessment methods for Legal English competence
● Professional ethics in legal translation and interpreting
● Corpus-based approaches to Legal English learning and translation
● Preparing students for careers in the legal profession

Submission Guidelines
Abstracts of 250–300 words should clearly outline the topic, methodology, and relevance to the theme of the Call. Please include:
● Title of the presentation or workshop
● Author name(s) and affiliation(s)
● A brief biographical note for marketing purposes(max. 100 words)

When we set up ILETA, we wanted to have an all-inclusive environment for legal English trainers, interpreters, translators, teachers and materials writers.

In the fast-paced world of teaching legal English, it’s easy to move from one task to the next without pause—often carrying stress and distraction along the way. This month’s ILETA Monthly MeetUP is an opportunity to slow down and explore how mindfulness can help us work—and teach—more effectively.

We’ll look at practical, easy-to-apply techniques that can fit into even the busiest schedules, including:
• Short exercises to reduce stress in the moment
• Simple strategies to improve focus during lessons or work sessions
• Quick “reset” practices to transition between tasks with clarity

Whether you are new to mindfulness or already experimenting with it, this session will offer useful tools you can immediately bring into your professional routine—and your classroom.

Speaker: Karo Karczmarek-Giel
This session is led by Karo Karczmarek-Giel. She completed the Foundations of Positive Psychology Specialization from the University of Pennsylvania, and her perspective is also informed by her lived experience as an AuDHD professional.

Alongside her strong interest in practical wellbeing tools that support stress reduction, focus, and sustainable work. Karo is also a web and systems developer who helps exacting founders and solo experts build stable, maintainable websites that work properly behind the scenes. Her work combines development, UX, and systems thinking.

She also speaks to expert service providers, including language professionals, about making better website and systems decisions with less technical stress.
