TAP Togolok Archaelogical Project

TAP Togolok Archaelogical Project Follow us and discover the ancient site of Togolok in Turkmenistan! Gubaev, G. Koshelenko and M.

The Italian Archaeological Mission has been working in Turkmenistan since 1990 and in 2009 concluded the Archaeological Map of the Murghab alluvial fan ("Archaeological Map of the Murghab Delta" - AMMD) (Gubaev, Koshelenko, Tosi 1998; Salvatori, Tosi 2008). The first joint project among Italy, Russia and Turkmenistan, under the scientific direction of A. Tosi, has allowed us to reconstruct an accu

rate model of water management and river exploitation that has to be considered one of the most important aspect of the anthropic presence in the alluvial fan. During the years, the archaeological mission has not only carried out an extensive and intensive survey across the alluvial fan, but also has conducted excavations in different archaeological sites, ranging from the Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age: the area of Takhirbai (1992-1994) (Cattani 1998) and several Andronovo sites (Sites No. 1211, 1219 (Cattani 2008), Ojakly (Cerasetti 2012; Rouse, Cerasetti). Dr. Barbara Cerasetti is the project Director of the TAP - Togolok Archaeological Project since 2006. The focus of the reasearch is now the Bronze Age site of Togolok 1.

The Togolok Archaeological Project is officially inviting enthusiastic students and PhD candidates to join the upcoming Fall 2026 fieldwork season.

Run by an international team from FU Berlin, Bern University, and ISMEO, this project focuses on Togolok 1, a well-preserved mound in the Karakum desert dating back to the 3rd-2nd millennium BCE. This is a unique opportunity for researchers specializing in Near Eastern and Central Asian archaeology to gain invaluable field experience.

During this season, participants will actively engage in stratigraphic excavation, geophysical prospection, and hands-on material analysis.

The fieldwork is scheduled for approximately one month between September and October 2026.

If you are eager to work hard and advance your academic career, submit your CV and a short motivation letter of maximum 250 words. Applications must be sent via email to both:

Dr. Barbara Cerasetti at [email protected]

Şebnem Turhan at [email protected].

The deadline for submission is August 2nd, 2026.

Yesterday marked the closing of the exhibition “Ancient Civilizations of Turkmenistan” at the Capitoline Museums in Rome.

Over the past months, the exhibition welcomed an impressive number of visitors and sparked great interest, a response that fills us with joy and pride. Seeing such enthusiasm for the extraordinary heritage on display has been truly rewarding.

We hope there will soon be new opportunities to admire once again the magnificent artifacts of this great, friendly, and brotherly country, home to a rich and ancient cultural legacy.

Thank you for joining us on this unforgettable journey through history!
