Jarndyce and Jarndyce.

The case has been in the Court of Chancery so long that nobody alive can remember how it started, what it concerns, or whether it will ever conclude.

It has consumed fortunes, sanities, entire lives. It has become its own weather system, generating a fog so dense it has spread from the court into the streets, into the lungs of the city, into the consciousness of everyone unfortunate enough to orbit it.

Dickens opens Bleak House with this fog, describes it for two full pages before introducing a single human being, and in doing so announces his subject with a clarity that the fog itself seems designed to contradict.

The subject is obstruction. The subject is a society that has built, with tremendous institutional effort, an elaborate machine for preventing justice from ever arriving.

This is Dickens at his most ambitious and his most controlled, which surprises people who associate him primarily with sentiment and caricature. Both are here, but they are in service of something architectural. Bleak House is constructed with a precision its surface chaos deliberately conceals.

Two narrators alternate throughout: an omniscient, present-tense voice of cool satirical fury, and Esther Summerson, one of the novel’s central characters, writing in retrospect with a modesty so consistent it becomes its own kind of mystery.

The double narration is not a technical experiment for its own sake. It is the formal enactment of the novel’s argument, that the same reality looks entirely different depending on where you are standing inside it, and that power determines whose perspective gets called objective.
Esther is one of Dickens’s most debated creations, and the debate is legitimate.

She is good in a way that can read as flatness, grateful and self-deprecating to a degree that modern readers sometimes find suffocating. But there is something else operating underneath the goodness, a person managing her own illegitimacy, her uncertain origins, her lack of any sanctioned claim on the world, by making herself indispensable through virtue. Her goodness is not passive.

It is a survival strategy, and reading it that way transforms her from a saccharine narrator into one of the more quietly complex figures in Victorian fiction.

The novel’s cast is enormous and this is not the place to map it fully, but two figures demand mention. Inspector Bucket is perhaps the first great detective in English literature, predating Holmes by decades, and he moves through the novel with a watchfulness and a social fluency that makes him simultaneously impressive and faintly sinister.

He is very good at his job and his job serves a system that the novel has already demonstrated to be corrupt, a tension Dickens holds without resolving.

Then there is Harold Skimpole, modeled on Leigh Hunt, who performs childlike helplessness as a sophisticated means of extracting money and obligation from everyone around him while accepting no responsibility for anything. He is one of the most precise portraits of a particular kind of charming parasite that literature has produced, and he is very funny, and he is genuinely monstrous.

The death of Richard Carstone, a young man who surrenders his entire future to the Jarndyce case, watching it eat his ambition and then his health and then his life while remaining convinced that the next ruling will change everything, is the novel’s emotional center and its most devastating argument.

Richard is not stupid. He is not weak in any simple sense. He is a person who has been given hope as a substitute for justice, and who cannot stop believing in it because the alternative is to accept that the institution he has staked everything on is simply indifferent to his existence. Dickens understood that this is how systems sustain themselves, not through overt cruelty but through the management of expectation, the perpetual suggestion that resolution is imminent, that patience will be rewarded, that the machinery is working even when it is working against you.

Bleak House is long, and it requires a reader willing to trust that the accumulation is intentional, that the seemingly digressive subplots are load-bearing, that Dickens is not wandering but mapping. That trust is rewarded.

The novel lands with the weight of everything it has built, a fog lifting briefly to reveal a landscape of institutional violence so thorough and so ordinary that the horror is not in any single event but in the architecture itself.

Dickens was angry when he wrote this. The anger is cold, which makes it last.

Caring for a young patient means caring for the people who love them too.
