Art Workshop offers a series of creative courses in painting, drawing, art making, writing (fiction, nonfiction, memoir, essay), culinary arts, and Italian language. Under the direction of Lynn Gernert and Charles Kreloff artists and writers are invited to join committed adults in an atmosphere of serious study and enjoyable play. Past teachers and visiting artists include Dorothy Allison, Michael

Cunningham, Marilyn French, Vivian Gornick, Maxine Hong Kingston, Tony Kushner, Frank McCourt, and Grace Paley. Classes are five days a week with two days off for day trips or short-term travel.

Writing Fiction: Any Genre, No Genre
July 8–21, 2026
Instructor:

All fiction is woven from the same threads: character, setting, dialogue, plot, theme, pace. Genre fiction adds additional elements—crime stories lean heavily on plot, speculative fiction on setting. These are in addition to the elements of good writing, not substitutes for them. This workshop will focus on participants’ in-progress novels and short stories. We’ll supplement the workshop format with one-on-one meetings with the instructor, and with in-class discussions of structure, point of view, and other elements of the well-built narrative. Writers in any or no genre, and at any level, are welcome.

Writing for Young Adults
July 8–21, 2026
Instructor:

When asked for advice about writing for children, Maurice Sendak responded, “I don’t write for children; I write as a child.” The same is true for those who write books that teenagers love. This class will bring out your inner adolescent to help you find a powerful fictional voice, and develop strategies for shaping your ideas into novels and stories. Whether you already have a project underway or are brand new to the genre, you’ll find the work of this class beneficial in understanding the world of books for young people. The workshop format will be supplemented by discussions of character, voice,plot, structure, setting, revision, and point of view in the context of the work presented. The instructor will also address issues concerning publishing that will help you find the right home for your book when it’s ready for the world to see it.

Jump Start Your Writing Life
This class will jump start your writing in ways that are both playful and challenging. Students will learn how writers get ideas, how they trick their minds into getting words on the page, and how they look objectively at their work. You’ll learn how to bring fictional or real-life characters to life, how to create vivid scenes and settings, and how to make your readers feel what you want them to feel. Most important of all, you’ll identify your own material and begin to discover the stories, novels, or memoirs only you can write. Whether you used to write but stopped along the way, you always wanted to write but never got up the courage to try, you write but never finish anything, or you’re stuckin the middle of a story that just won’t move, this class is for you! No prior writing experience is required for this class, just the desire to make writing part of your life. You’ll leave with the tools to make that happen.

Writing Your First Chapter—and Beyond
June 24 — July 7, 2026

Every great novel begins with a single, well-crafted sentence, but what happens after that? This workshop is designed for writers who have a brilliant idea for a book but who may be stuck when it comes to getting it on paper. �In a workshop led by a novelist who’s also a literary agent, we’ll focus on beginnings: how to introduce characters we want to root for, however imperfect; how to layer in setting and tone; how to plant the seeds in that very first chapter for everything that is to come. We will foster an environment of trust and support. Each session will start with free-writing to get the creative synapses sparking; then we’ll read aloud and offer constructive feedback; and we will focus on how other writers have overcome the specific obstacles participants may be facing. �What will you leave with? A dynamite first chapter and a roadmap for how to make your book both compelling and salable, whether you started with just an idea or with an entire first draft. You’ll also forge a community of writing peers, and you’ll walk away with a notebook of writing prompts and ideas. Bonus: at our last session, we’ll draft pitch letters to literary agents, with an eye toward finding a lasting publisher for you and your work.

Capturing Assisi in Watercolor
Instructor:
July 8–21, 2026

Using the Assisi cityscape and Umbrian landscape as inspiration, this workshop will utilize a number of steps in the process of creating your watercolors. Working both in the studio and on site we’ll first focus—through observation, drawing, and thumbnail studies—to create a monochromatic block-in to identify the values and composition of your painting. Once there we then will use color mixing, paint application, and brushwork to capture the light, shadow, and various textures that exist in the landscape and architecture of Assisi and Umbria. The ultimate goal is to create luminous watercolors that are aesthetically pleasing without being overworked.
