Hittu fjórfættu starfsfélagana okkar hjá Prjónastofu Kötlu🐾

Meet our four-legged Katla Wool team 🐾

When you visit Katla Wool in Vík, you're not only greeted by Icelandic wool products... you may also be welcomed by our two beloved Border Collies. Sometimes you'll find them here together, sometimes it's just Esja or Rella... it all depends on who's decided to come to work that day. 😊🐾

🤍🖤 Esja is our youngest team member. She turned one year old in March. Her name comes from Mount Esja, the iconic mountain overlooking Reykjavík.

She's full of energy, curiosity, and always ready to explore every corner of the shop and production area.⚡️👀🎾

🤍🤎🖤 Rella is our older team member and celebrated her 10th birthday this July. Her name has several meanings in Icelandic, but one of them describes her perfectly. The expression “að rella í einhverjum” can mean “to badger someone” – and that has always been our Rella!

She is the queen of cuddles 👑. If you stop scratching her behind the ears or giving her belly rubs, she'll happily remind you that you're not finished yet. These days, she sometimes misses a visitor or simply sleeps through all the excitement... but once she spots someone ready for cuddles, she's still our Rella. ❤️

Together, Esja and Rella are an important part of our family. Whether you're visiting us to find a wool sweater or simply stopping by to say hello, they'll be there to give you the warmest welcome... and maybe ask for a few cuddles too ❤️

🌞🌑

Lokað 12. ágúst / Closed August 12th

Þann 12. ágúst verður Katla Wokół closed for the day.

Það verður sérstakur dagur á Íslandi – sólmyrkvi /sólar eclipse – og við viljum gefa öllum í teyminu okkar tækifæri til að njóta þessa einstaka augnabliks ✨

This eclipse will be especially remarkable here in Iceland. A total solar eclipse will be visible in parts of West Iceland, while here in Vík the Moon will cover almost 99% of the Sun – around 98.9% at maximum eclipse 🌑☀️

For a few moments, daylight will fade and our familiar Icelandic landscape will look very different. Events like this don’t happen every day – in fact, this will be the first total solar eclipse visible from Iceland since 1954. ✨

Sometimes it’s worth closing the shop for a moment, looking up at the sky and simply enjoying something extraordinary together. 🤍

Við opnum aftur eins og venjulega 13. ágúst.

Enjoy the eclipse, stay safe and don’t forget your eclipse glasses!

☀️

💜 The brightest days of the year have arrived in Vík.

The summer solstice and Jónsmessa are just around the corner – a time when the night turns into light. ✨🌞

According to local legend, on the tiny hill of Syngjandi in Vík, where an elf church (álfakirkja) was once believed to stand, elves would gather and dance beneath the bright summer sky on At. John's Eve night (Jónsmessunótt).

Today, Vík is just as magical at this time of year – bathed in the golden light of the midnight sun and surrounded by a sea of purple flowers. 💜

✨ Velkomnar sumarsólstöður / Welcome, summer solstice.
✨ Velkomið stjarnfræðilegt sumar / Welcome, astronomical summer.

⚔️

The horned Viking helmet we associate with warriors of the North was most likely created by artists — not by history itself.

Historical helmets from the Viking Age were simple and practical, designed for protection in battles
The Gjermundbu helmet discovered in Norway — one of the very few surviving helmets from the Viking Age — had no horns at all.

The horned helmet became a legend during the Romantic era in the 19th century.

One of the first artists to portray northern warriors with horned helmets was August Malmström, who illustrated the Icelandic Friðþjófs saga ins frœkna.

Later, Richard Wagner made the image even more famous in Der Ring des Nibelungen — and the horned warrior slowly became part of modern imagination.

Sometimes myths become stronger than history.

Hlý peysa og tryggur vinur. Stundum er það allt sem þarf.

The loyalty of a friend can warm your heart as much as a wool sweater warms your body.
Sometimes the simplest things in life are the most precious.
