Skálanes is a natural and heritage science research centre located on the East coast of Iceland. The aim of Skálanes is to be a place of learning.
Skálanes is a nature and heritage research centre primarily working within the scientific fields of ecology, biology, archaeology, zoology, geography and geology. The centre is placed in a 1250 hectare undisturbed nature reserve at the mouth of a remote fjord surrounded by waterfalls, snow patches, shoreline, mountains and a 640m high coastal cliff. Nearest settlement is 19 kilometers and three ri
ver crossings away - the town of Seyðisfjörður inhabiting 650 people. Wild life such as a local eider colony, arctic fox, puffin, reindeer and mink inhabits the surroundings just as the 47 different bird species, the site-specific flora and fauna and a collection of archaeological sites. The site and research centre is available as a frame for university students, researchers and other professionals to interact with the Icelandic nature and cultural heritage. We host expeditions and classes with university and college students and researchers working within subjects such as ecology, anthropology, biology, archaeology, zoology, geography and geology. Skálanes is located 700km from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. The nearest airport, Egilsstaðir Domestic Airport, is located 24 km from the town of Seyðisfjörður and 43 km from Skálanes.
