Sigurdur Hjartarson, founder and original curator of The Icelandic Phallological Museum passed away in the presence of loved ones, this last Friday at the age of 82.
A remarkable individual, Sigurdur embraced his eccentricity and provoked people to think. The originator of genuine phallology, Sigurdur was also a true scholar in other fields, holding a BA in history from the University of Iceland and an M Litt in Latin American history from The University of Edinburgh. In his time he wrote and translated some 20 books on history and Spanish and had a peer-reviewed thesis published in Icelandʹs premiere academic history journal, Saga.
His legacy goes beyond founding one of the most unique museums in the world, as Sigurdur was foremost a teacher at heart, and he left a lasting impression on the hundreds of students he taught over a 37-year career.
Today, we mourn the loss of a provocateur, an entrepreneur, a visionary, a scholar, and above all, a dedicated teacher whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
