We’re delighted to welcome Kaveh Akbar to the faculty of the 2027 Iceland Writers Retreat.

A poet, novelist, and editor, Kaveh is the author of the poetry collections Pilgrim Bell and Calling a Wolf a Wolf, as well as the bestselling novel Martyr!, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and received the 2024 Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize for Fiction. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Paris Review, Best American Poetry, and many other publications.

Whether you know him through his unforgettable poetry or his acclaimed fiction, this is an incredible opportunity to learn from one of today’s most celebrated literary voices in the intimate workshop setting that defines Iceland Writers Retreat.

Newsletter subscribers were the first to know—and now we’re excited to share the news with everyone. Meet the first three faculty members for the 2027 Iceland Writers Retreat.

Kaveh Akbar 
Kaveh Akbar’s poems appear in the New Yorker, New York Times, Paris Review, Best American Poetry, and elsewhere. He is the author of two poetry collections: Pilgrim Bell (Graywolf 2021) and Calling a Wolf a Wolf (Alice James 2017), in addition to a chapbook, Portrait of the Alcoholic (Sibling Rivalry 2016). He is also the editor of The Penguin Book of Spiritual Verse: 100 Poets on the Divine (Penguin Classics 2022). Martyr! (Knopf, 2024), Kaveh’s first novel, was a New York Times Bestseller, the 2024 recipient of the Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize for Fiction, a 2024 Discover Prize Finalist, and a 2024 National Book Award Finalist.

Louise Doughty
